Key facts

  • Bolton's pass rate was 51.8% in 2025/26 from 11,570 tests, 1.8 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 16 of 31 centres in North West (North West average 49.0%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 2.8 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 4.9 points, from 56.7% to 51.8%.
  • Male candidates passed at 53.5% and female candidates at 50%, a gap of 3.5 points.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 16.2 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 12 weeks, so waits have grown by about 4.2 weeks.

Bolton is the centre most learners in western Greater Manchester want, and the pass rate explains why. At 51.8 per cent it sits above the national average and above all three of the nearest alternatives: Atherton passes 44.3 per cent, Bury and Cheetham Hill are not much better. On a straight comparison of neighbours, Bolton is the easiest option for miles.

That popularity has a price. More than 11,000 candidates were tested here in 2025/26, which makes it one of the busiest centres in the North West, and the median wait has stretched past sixteen weeks. The pass rate has also been drifting down, nearly five points over four years.

The driving is town-centre work from the moment you leave. The centre is on Weston Street, a few minutes south of Bolton town centre, and the routes go straight into traffic rather than easing you out through an estate.

Bolton is a traffic-light test before it is anything else. The practice loops on this page pass 50 sets of traffic lights across 55 km of driving, along with 21 signal-controlled crossings and six zebras. Lights that close together change the rhythm of the whole drive. You spend the test approaching a stop line, reading it and moving off again, and the faults that follow are the ones that come from repetition: creeping over the line, hanging too far back, and hesitating on a green when the way is clear.

Speeds are steady rather than varied. About three quarters of the distance on the loops is 30 mph and only a tenth is 20. What stands out instead is the other tenth, which is at 50 mph, most of it on the St. Peter's Way stretch that one of the loops uses. Coming off a 50 into town traffic, and settling to 30 before the sign rather than after it, is the transition worth practising.

Roundabouts barely feature. There is one conventional roundabout on the loops, on Thynne Street, against six mini-roundabouts scattered through the residential sections. Mini-roundabouts count as roundabouts: signal the exit, give way to the right, and keep off the painted circle.

Weston Street, Newport Road, Back Weston Street South and Radcliffe Road recur on most loops, with Manchester Road and Bradford Road on the longer ones. There are 73 schools in the area, so the crossings work hardest at either end of the school day.

Test day at Bolton

Bolton station is under a kilometre from the door, which makes this an easy centre to reach by train if you are not arriving in a car.

Parking is the thing to plan around. The listings that give a figure agree on eleven spaces on site, shared between staff and candidates, at a centre running more than 11,000 tests a year. Do not count on one being free. Most instructors drop candidates at the door and find a space on the surrounding streets, and that is the sensible default if you are coming in your own car.

Access is better here than at many centres of this type. Two independent listings agree on a ramp into the building and on male, female and accessible toilets. Descriptions of the building itself do not agree with each other, so look for the number and the DVSA sign rather than for a landmark somebody has described to you.

Car tests and ADI part 2 and part 3 tests are held here. No motorcycle or lorry tests are listed. Booking, moving and cancelling a test is done through GOV.UK and nowhere else.

August and July have historically been the strongest months at Bolton, November and January the weakest, though the spread across the year is only a few points.
