Key facts

  • Bury's pass rate was 46.3% in 2025/26 from 7,024 tests, 3.7 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 24 of 31 centres in North West (North West average 49.0%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 2.7 points below it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 7.8 points, from 38.5% to 46.3%.
  • Male candidates passed at 48.9% and female candidates at 43%, a gap of 5.9 points.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 7.6 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 12 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 4.4 weeks.

Sixty-eight per cent of the mapped roads within a couple of miles of Smith Street carry a 20 mph limit. That changes what the test is about. Speed is rarely the thing that catches people out at Bury; observation, position and the steady business of side streets are. Fifty-five sets of traffic lights and twenty-three mini-roundabouts sit inside the same radius, and there is no dual carriageway and no A-road on the profile at all.

Twenty-nine schools share that area, which is a lot for a town centre, and the practice loops on this page run between about five and eight miles through the streets between them. The pass rate is below the national average, but it has risen by nearly eight points since 2021, one of the bigger improvements anywhere.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

The twenty is the test. With more than two thirds of the roads around the centre limited to 20 mph, the drop from a 30 has to happen before the sign rather than after it, and holding a steady 20 without drifting up on a downhill stretch is harder than it sounds. Plenty of candidates never once touch 30 and still collect faults for drifting over the limit in a 20.

Junctions come thick after that. Fifty-five sets of lights and twenty-three mini-roundabouts sit within a couple of miles, so the pattern of the drive is short runs between decisions. Walmersley Road, Rochdale Road and Bridge Street carry the busier part, with bus traffic, parked cars and pedestrian crossings close together. Amber gambles and stopping over the line are what this half of the route produces. The mini-roundabouts want the same discipline they want everywhere: give way to the right, signal for the exit, do not cut the circle.

Two level crossings sit inside the same radius, and twenty-nine schools do too, so the time of day matters more here than at most centres. Bell Lane and Wash Lane appear on the loops, and one of the longer ones runs out along Bury New Road.

Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the residential roads off the main routes, around Woodhill Road, Huntley Mount Road and Thrush Drive, where parking on both sides makes a pull-up on the right worth practising properly.

Test day at Bury

The centre is on Smith Street, close to the middle of Bury. Bolton Street station is a little over a kilometre away, so the walk is doable but not short, and most candidates arrive with an instructor. GOV.UK publishes no access line for this centre, so if you use a wheelchair or need anything arranged, ring before the day rather than assuming either way. Bury runs car tests and ADI part 3 only. There are no motorcycle tests and no ADI part 2 here.

Parking is not published. A unit this close to a town centre usually relies on nearby public parking rather than bays of its own, so the typical pattern is a drop-off at the door with the car left on a side road or in a car park. Give yourself ten minutes for that and for the walk back.

The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the insurance declaration before you go out to the car. The eyesight check is done outside on Smith Street. The wait has been running under eight weeks and has shortened by more than four weeks over the past year, so a workable date is easier to get here than it was. Booking, moving and cancelling all go through GOV.UK.
