Key facts
- Cheetham Hill's pass rate was 44.7% in 2025/26 from 10,207 tests, 5.3 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 25 of 31 centres in North West (North West average 49.0%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 4.3 points below it.
- The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 40.6% (2023/24) and 46.3% (2021/22).
- Male candidates passed at 48.7% and female candidates at 40.5%, a gap of 8.2 points, wider than at most centres.

Cheetham Hill is a junction test with almost no roundabouts in it. Across the five practice loops on this page there is not a single roundabout manoeuvre, and within two and a half kilometres of the centre there are 201 signalled junctions, a density you meet in inner cities and almost nowhere else. The test is made of traffic lights, right turns across oncoming traffic and busy urban roads. Cheetham Hill Road, Bury New Road, Rochdale Road and Queens Road carry most of it, with the city centre close enough to matter. Nearly six in ten roads in the area are 20 mph. The pass rate has been stable for several years, a little below the North West average, and the wait is shorter than the national median.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Two things define the driving here. The first is the 20 mph limit: 58 per cent of the roads tagged around the centre are 20, and most of the rest are 30. The second is the number of controlled junctions, 201 within two and a half kilometres.
Put those together and the test becomes a long sequence of approaches to traffic lights at low speed, with something happening on both sides of the car the whole way. Cheetham Hill Road, Bury New Road, Rochdale Road, Waterloo Road and Queens Road are the arteries, and they are lined with shops, side turnings and people crossing between parked cars.
Turns are what the loops are built from. One holds thirteen right turns and ten left; another has twelve right and six left. A right turn out of a side road onto a busy main road, waiting for a gap while traffic builds behind you, is the junction this test repeats, and it is where observation quietly thins out after the tenth one.
Seven level crossings sit in the area, more than most urban centres have, and 66 schools. From mid-afternoon the residential streets around Elizabeth Street, Woodlands Road and Hazelbottom Road fill with cars and children, and the 20 mph limit stops being notional.
If you prepare one thing for Cheetham Hill, make it emerging right at a junction where you cannot see far in either direction. Everything else on this test is a variation on it.

Test day at Cheetham Hill
The centre is on Alderglen Road, a side street off Waterloo Road in Cheetham, north of the city centre. It is a residential setting rather than an industrial estate, so the roads immediately around it are narrow and parked up, and the first minute of the drive starts that way too.
DVSA runs car tests and ADI parts 2 and 3 here, and the centre is accessible if you use a wheelchair. Toilets and waiting facilities are not published, so if you need to know before the day, ring the centre.
Parking for candidates on a small urban unit is normally limited, and instructors often drop candidates at the door and park on a nearby street. That is what is typical for a centre of this kind rather than something the record confirms, so leave time either way.
Manchester Victoria is under a mile and a half away, which makes this one of the easier centres in the city to reach by train.
Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK. The wait here is close to ten weeks, shorter than at West Didsbury or Sale, both of which are further out and slower to get into.
