Key facts
- Stoke on Trent's pass rate was 41.6% in 2025/26 from 6,646 tests, 8.4 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 21 of 26 centres in West Midlands (West Midlands average 46.2%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 4.6 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 3.8 points, from 45.4% to 41.6%.
- Male candidates passed at 43.4% and female candidates at 40%, a gap of 3.4 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 17.6 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 23.2 weeks ahead.
- 37.2% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Traffic lights set the rhythm of this test. The mapping within 2.5 km of Clayton Lane holds 106 signalled junctions, 20 mini-roundabouts and eight named roundabouts, and it includes dual carriageway and a run of A and B roads: the A52, the A519, the A5006 and the A5007 among them. Four fifths of the mapped roads are 30 limits, but there are 40 and 50 stretches to be found as well. The pass rate is more than eight points below the national average and has slipped since 2021, which puts the centre near the bottom of the West Midlands table. The wait is long, close to eighteen weeks.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
One of the practice loops on this page is twelve kilometres long and contains a single right turn and a single left turn. That tells you what the longer routes here are: a run out along Newcastle Road and the A-roads, six roundabouts, and very little else to do but hold a lane, read the traffic ahead and keep the speed accurate. Faults on a route shaped like that arrive late, when attention has slipped rather than when technique has failed.
The shorter loops are the opposite. One covers seven and a half kilometres with twelve right turns on it, mostly around Harpfield Road and the residential streets nearby. Right turns across oncoming traffic, into and out of side roads, are the thing to practise for those.
In between sits the town driving. Clayton Lane, Clayton Road and Newcastle Lane carry it, with 106 signalled junctions mapped within 2.5 km, a dense figure for a catchment of that size. Lights that close together produce the familiar faults: creeping over a stop line, an amber taken when it should not have been, a yellow box entered with no exit.
The named roundabouts are Waterloo, Blackfriars, Milehouse, Brampton and Hanchurch, with 20 mini-roundabouts in the same radius. Some are multi-lane and approached at 40, so lane discipline matters more here than at a town centre where everything is slow.
There are 46 schools within 2.5 km. Manoeuvres are usually set on the quieter roads off Dartmouth Avenue and Stafford Avenue, where the kerbs are straight and the parking is even.

Test day at Stoke on Trent
The centre is at Parklands on Clayton Lane in Trent Vale, on the side of the city towards Newcastle-under-Lyme. Stoke-on-Trent station is around 2.5 kilometres away, far enough that most candidates arrive by car with an instructor rather than on foot from the train.
GOV.UK publishes that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair. The tests taken here are car, motorcycle module 2 on the road, ADI part 2 and ADI part 3, so expect motorcycles as well as cars around the building on some days. Nothing is published about candidate parking or the waiting room, and the sensible plan is the usual one: be dropped at the door, with the car parked nearby.
The wait here has been running well above the national median. It has come down a little over the past year, but a booked slot is still worth protecting, so move it only if you need to. Arrive about ten minutes before your time. The examiner checks your licence, takes the signed insurance declaration and does the eyesight check outside before you get in. Booking, moving and cancelling all go through GOV.UK.
