Key facts
- Macclesfield's pass rate was 51.9% in 2025/26 from 4,509 tests, 1.9 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 14 of 31 centres in North West (North West average 49.0%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 2.9 points above it.
- The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 44.3% (2022/23) and 51.9% (2025/26).
- Male candidates passed at 53.7% and female candidates at 49.8%, a gap of 3.9 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 21.4 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 22.8 weeks ahead.
- 45.9% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Macclesfield test centre is about as close to a railway station as a test centre gets, a couple of hundred metres, on Green Street just off Hibel Road. That makes it easy to reach and hard to park at. Almost nine roads in ten inside the area the routes cover are 30 mph, so the test is a sustained piece of town driving rather than a mix, with eleven mini-roundabouts and a lot of traffic lights inside it. Pass rates sit a shade above the national average at 51.9 per cent and have been steady. Booking is the problem: the median wait ran past twenty weeks in mid-2026, longer than Buxton or Bredbury, both of which also pass more candidates.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Nearly nine roads in ten inside the area the loops cover are 30 mph, and no 20 mph zones are recorded at all. That sounds easy and is not. It means holding 30 for long stretches through a town centre with parked cars, side turnings and pedestrians, and the fault that gets marked here is drifting down to 25 out of nervousness rather than going over the limit.
Twenty-three sets of traffic lights lie within the area, most of them clustered round Hibel Road, Sunderland Street and the streets off Green Street. They sit close enough together that stopping across a junction is a live risk. Eleven mini-roundabouts carry the rest of the junction load, with one conventional roundabout at Beech Grove.
The Silk Road is the exception to the 30. It is the town's bypass, faster and wider than anything else on the loops, and it appears on two of the five routes. Joining and leaving it in the right lane, at the right speed, is the part most worth practising beforehand. Buxton Road and Hurdsfield Road climb east out of the town, and hill starts on a real gradient come with them.
Twenty-three schools sit inside the same area, which is a lot, and Park Lane and the residential streets near it are the usual ground for a reverse or a pull-up on the right. An afternoon test on a school day meets the worst of both.

Test day at Macclesfield
The centre is Unit 4 at Bailey Court on Green Street, a short walk from Macclesfield station and close to Hibel Road. GOV.UK lists car tests, motorcycle module 2 on-road, and ADI part 3.
It publishes no line about wheelchair access for this centre, which is not the same as saying there is none. If access matters to you, ring DVSA before the day rather than finding out on it.
Parking is not published either. Bailey Court is a small courtyard of units, and at centres of this kind the few spaces outside tend to be taken by staff and examiners. The practical answer is to be dropped at the door, or to use the town's parking and walk. Green Street and Cumberland Street carry town traffic through the morning, so allow for that on the way in.
Once inside, you will be called by name, your licence checked and the insurance declaration signed before you go out. The eyesight check is done outside on a parked plate. Expect the drive to begin by pulling out into moving traffic rather than from a quiet kerb, so the first observation of the test is one that counts.
All booking, rescheduling and cancelling is done through GOV.UK.
