Key facts
- Buxton's pass rate was 58.7% in 2025/26 from 4,904 tests, 8.7 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 3 of 20 centres in East Midlands (East Midlands average 50.8%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 7.9 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 12.3 points, from 46.4% to 58.7%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 15 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- 23.6% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Buxton has more fast road around it than a town of its size usually does. About one road in seven within a couple of miles of the centre on Green Lane carries a 50 mph limit, and almost all of the rest is 30, so the test swings between town speed and open road with very little in between. Complicated urban layouts are not the issue here. There is exactly one mini-roundabout in the whole area and nineteen sets of traffic lights, fewer than at most centres, and no level crossings at all. The practice loops on this page run between about six and eight miles and pick up Queens Road, Bakewell Road and St John's Road. Buxton has one of the higher pass rates in the East Midlands and it has climbed sharply since 2021.

The 50 mph roads are what makes Buxton different. About a seventh of the mapped roads within a couple of miles carry that limit, and they run out of a town where almost everything else is 30. The transition is the marked bit in both directions: getting up to a speed that suits the road once the limit rises, and losing it again in good time on the way back in. Driving a national or 50 limit road too slowly is a fault, and it is a common one on tests that spend most of their length at 30.
Junction work is straightforward by comparison. There is one mini-roundabout in the area and nineteen sets of lights, so the roundabouts that matter are the conventional ones, with Cavendish Avenue, Harpur Hill Road and Trent Avenue among the named junctions. Approach lane, observation and a signal that goes on for the exit rather than after it will cover most of what is asked.
The rest is ordinary town driving on Fairfield Road, Bench Road, Dale Road and Spring Gardens, with Bridge Street and Station Road linking them. Parked cars narrow several of these to one working lane, so meeting oncoming traffic and deciding early who goes first comes up repeatedly. Only nine schools sit within the same radius, which is fewer than at most centres, so the school run is less of a factor than the general traffic.
Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the quieter residential roads off these, where the kerb is straight and there is parking on one side. The loops run between about six and eight miles.

Test day at Buxton
The centre is at The Dairy on Green Lane, a converted unit rather than a purpose-built office, so look for the number on the door rather than for a large DVSA sign. GOV.UK records that you can access the centre if you use a wheelchair. It runs car tests and ADI part 3 only, so there are no motorcycle tests and no ADI part 2 here.
Nothing about public transport or candidate parking is published for this centre. Most people arrive with an instructor, and for a unit of this kind the sensible assumption is a drop-off at the door with the car parked on a nearby road. Leave a few minutes for that rather than expecting a bay outside.
The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration that the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside before you get in. Booking, moving and cancelling all happen through GOV.UK. Waits at Buxton have been running above the national median and have grown by about three weeks over the past year, so it is worth taking a date that works rather than holding out for a better one.
