Key facts
- Sheffield's pass rate was 44.1% in 2025/26 from 9,788 tests, 5.9 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 26 of 27 centres in Yorkshire and The Humber (Yorkshire and The Humber average 50.4%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 6.3 points below it.
- The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 42.4% (2021/22) and 45.7% (2023/24).
- Male candidates passed at 46.7% and female candidates at 40.9%, a gap of 5.8 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 6 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 8.5 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 2.5 weeks.
Sheffield's Handsworth centre covers a wider range of speeds than most. Around three fifths of the roads mapped within 2.5 km of Orgreave Way are 20 mph, but more than a quarter are 40 or 50, and the A57 brings dual carriageway driving into the area. Very little sits in between. That jump, from estate roads at 20 straight onto something fast, is where the test is won or lost, and it shows in the figures: Handsworth has one of the lower pass rates in Yorkshire and the Humber. The compensation is the wait, which sits well under the national median and has shortened over the past year. If you are ready, you will not be waiting long for a date.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
The A57 is the road that decides most Handsworth tests. It is the fast, dual carriageway end of the area, and joining it, matching the speed of traffic already there, holding a lane and then losing that speed again is a sequence worth driving until it feels dull. Undue hesitation at the join is marked here as often as anything on the estates.
The rest of the network is unusually slow by comparison. Close to three fifths of the roads mapped within 2.5 km of the centre are 20 mph, and there is very little at 30 to bridge the two. Retford Road, Rotherham Road and Highfield Lane carry the busier through traffic, while Beaver Hill Road, Stradbroke Road and the streets off them are the residential half.
Roundabouts are present but not the point. Six are named in the area, including Coisley Hill, Mossway, Europa Link, Europa Way and Woodhouse Lane, most of them on the business park side near Highfield Spring, and only three mini-roundabouts are mapped nearby. One of the practice loops on this page has no roundabout at all and instead asks for 12 right turns and 12 left turns in around 11 kilometres, which is a better picture of what the test usually feels like.
Junction work, in other words, is what to practise: emerging right onto a busy road, and the speed change at the boundary of a 20 zone. There is also a level crossing in the area. The loops run from 9.8 to 11.2 kilometres.

Test day at Sheffield
The centre is on Orgreave Way in Handsworth, on the eastern side of Sheffield. GOV.UK confirms you can access it if you use a wheelchair. It runs car tests, lorry and bus tests, and ADI part 2 and part 3, so the site handles large vehicles as well as cars and can be busier than a car-only centre when a lorry test is going out.
Nothing is published about candidate parking or the waiting room. What is typical at a centre of this kind is a small number of marked bays and instructors parking on the surrounding roads, so allow a minute for that instead of assuming a space by the door.
Woodhouse station is under a kilometre away, close enough to walk, though most candidates arrive with an instructor.
Waits here are short by national standards and have come down over the past year, which makes a cancellation slot easier to pick up than at most centres. Arrive around ten minutes before your slot. The examiner checks your licence, asks you to sign the declaration that the car is insured for the test, and does the eyesight check outside before you get in. Booking and cancelling happen only through GOV.UK.
