Key facts

  • Chesterfield's pass rate was 56.2% in 2025/26 from 6,605 tests, 6.2 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 6 of 20 centres in East Midlands (East Midlands average 50.8%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 5.4 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 8.3 points, from 47.9% to 56.2%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 4.9 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 23 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 12.1 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 7.2 weeks.

Chesterfield passes 56.2 per cent of its candidates, eighty-sixth of the 302 centres ranked and sixth of the twenty in the East Midlands. It has also moved: 47.9 per cent in 2021/22 against 56.2 now, a rise of 8.3 points. What the practice loops on this page are built from is traffic lights — forty-eight sets of signals and thirty-six signalled crossings in fifty-three kilometres, which is dense for a town this size. Fifty-seven per cent of the distance is at 30 mph, and twelve per cent at 70 on dual carriageway. The wait has fallen from 13.1 weeks a year ago to 4.9 now, which is unusual enough to be worth acting on.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Forty-eight sets of traffic signals and thirty-six signalled crossings sit on these loops, across fifty-three kilometres of driving. That is roughly one set of signals every kilometre, and it is the thing that defines a Chesterfield test: a good part of the drive is spent approaching a light and working out what it is about to do.

The roundabouts are secondary, but not few. Nine named ones — Markham Road, Hollis Lane, Rother Way, Sheffield Road, Lockoford Lane, Chesterfield Road, Brewery Street, Lordsmill Street and Peveril Road — plus six mini-roundabouts, with each of the five practice loops on this page carrying three to five of them in nine to twelve kilometres.

Speeds spread wider than most town centres manage. Fifty-seven per cent of the distance is at 30 mph, nineteen per cent at 40, eight per cent at 50 and twelve per cent at 70 on dual carriageway. That last stretch is a genuine change of task, and it is the part that learners who have only driven the streets around Stonegravels tend not to have done.

The A619 and A632 both appear, along with the B6039, B6050, B6051, B6052, B6057, B6150 and B6543. St Helen's Street, Sheffield Road, Newbold Road, Hollis Lane, Holywell Street, Peveril Road, Lockoford Lane, Chesterfield Road, Holmebank West, Holmebank View, Rother Way and Hawksley Avenue carry the rest.

There are fourteen give-way junctions, four zebra crossings, no traffic calming anywhere on the set, no level crossing, and thirty-one schools in the area.

Test day at Chesterfield

Car tests run from the bus garage on Approach Road in Stonegravels, S41 7LT, along with motorcycle module 2 and ADI parts 2 and 3. DVSA says you can access this test centre if you use a wheelchair.

Chesterfield station is 800 metres away.

Nothing is published about parking. A working bus garage is not somewhere to leave a car casually, so treat the surrounding streets as the plan.

The waiting time is the reason to look here. A median of 4.9 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, against 11.9 weeks across Great Britain — and 13.1 weeks at this same centre a year earlier. It has more than halved. The first week with a tenth of its appointments still free was still twenty-two and a half weeks out, so the short median reflects slots freeing up rather than an empty diary.

The comparison worth making is Sheffield (Handsworth), fourteen kilometres away, which passes 44.1 per cent against Chesterfield's 56.2 and waits six weeks. Worksop and Ashfield are both about twenty kilometres out, passing 55.2 and 57.3 per cent, but Ashfield was waiting 18.2 weeks. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
