Key facts

  • Rotherham's pass rate was 53.1% in 2025/26 from 9,134 tests, 3.1 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 11 of 27 centres in Yorkshire and The Humber (Yorkshire and The Humber average 50.4%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 2.7 points above it.
  • The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 47.8% (2022/23) and 53.1% (2025/26).
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 9.5 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 20.4 weeks ahead.

Rotherham's centre is on Mangham Way, on an industrial estate off Mangham Road, and it is one of the busier centres in Yorkshire. It is also one of the sites that runs motorcycle module 1, the off-road manoeuvring test, which means there is a marked manoeuvring area on site as well as the usual comings and goings.

The driving splits sharply. Nearly half the roads mapped within two and a half kilometres are 20 mph, which is the estate part of the test, and the rest includes dual carriageway on Centenary Way and a long list of A-roads around the town. Moving from one to the other cleanly is what Rotherham asks for. The pass rate has been steady for several years and sits above the national average.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

The first minutes are spent on the estate roads around Mangham Road and Great Eastern Way, and then the test opens out. Centenary Way is dual carriageway and the fastest thing on the loops on this page. Joining it, choosing a lane and leaving it again by a slip is the skill it tests, and there is no time to think about it once you are on.

Roundabouts link most of the main roads. Stag Roundabout, Ickles Roundabout and Rhymer's Roundabout are the named ones nearby, along with junctions on Doncaster Road and Greasbrough Road. Five mini-roundabouts sit within two and a half kilometres of the centre, and thirty-four signalled junctions, so the type of control changes constantly and the habit of reading each one fresh matters.

Sixteen level crossings lie inside that same radius, which is a lot. This is a railway town, and the industrial lines cross the roads rather than passing under them. Approach one expecting to stop, and never move onto it until the road beyond is clear.

Car Hill, Barbot Hill Road and Greasbrough Street carry the older residential half, and they also give Rotherham its gradients. A hill start on a slope with parked cars either side is a fair bet on any route. Nearly half the roads nearby are 20 mph, so the change down from a 40 on Rotherham Road or Aldwarke Road into a 20 zone comes up more than once, and it has to happen at the sign rather than after it. Manoeuvres are usually set on the quieter streets, Scrooby Street and Firth Street among them.

Test day at Rotherham

Because Rotherham runs motorcycle module 1 as well as module 2, the site has an off-road manoeuvring area, and there will often be bikes on it. Keep that in mind when you pull in. It is in use, it is not overflow parking, and it is not somewhere to practise a bay park before your test. The record also lists car tests and ADI part 3.

Candidate parking is not published by DVSA for this centre. Industrial estate units of this kind usually have bays for candidates and instructors, which is typical rather than guaranteed, so arrive with a couple of minutes in hand rather than assuming a space by the door.

Nothing is published about wheelchair access or about a waiting room here. That is an absence of information rather than an absence of facilities, but if you need to know what the building is like, ring the booking line before the day rather than finding out on it.

Rotherham Central station is a little over a kilometre away, so walking in is possible, though most candidates come with an instructor. The examiner checks your licence, takes the signed declaration that the car is insured and does the eyesight check outside on the estate before you get in. Booking, moving and cancelling all go through GOV.UK.
