Key facts

  • Barnsley's pass rate was 58.5% in 2025/26 from 7,737 tests, 8.5 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 3 of 27 centres in Yorkshire and The Humber (Yorkshire and The Humber average 50.4%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 8.1 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 2.8 points, from 55.7% to 58.5%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 5.4 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 21.4 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 12.9 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 7.5 weeks.
  • 25.4% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

There are 33 sets of traffic signals on the five practice loops on this page and not a single mini-roundabout. That is an unusual shape for a Yorkshire town test, and it sets the rhythm of the drive: stop, wait, move off, stop again. Fifteen of the pedestrian crossings on the loops are signalled as well, so a green ahead does not always mean a clear run. Away from the centre the routes pick up a dual carriageway and a short stretch at 70 mph, so the test can go from a queue at a red light to national speed limit driving inside a few minutes. Barnsley passes a higher share of candidates than all but two centres in Yorkshire and The Humber, and the wait here is short by national standards.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

The signals set the pace. There are 33 sets of them and 15 signalled crossings on the practice loops on this page, spread across 55 km, which works out at a controlled stop roughly every kilometre. The fault this produces is rarely a jumped red. It is creeping over a stop line while waiting, or being caught in the wrong gear because the light changed earlier than expected.

Roundabouts here are all conventional. Higham Common Road, Racecommon Road, Whinby Road, Higham Lane, Dodworth Road and Barugh Green Road are the loop roads that carry them, and one of the shorter loops takes in nine roundabouts in a little over ten kilometres. With no mini-roundabouts anywhere on the loops, what is watched is lane choice and position on the approach, not the quick give-and-take that minis demand.

The fast part of the test comes off the A-roads. Around a quarter of the loop distance is at 40 mph and a smaller share is at 70 on dual carriageway. Joining at speed, holding the lane, then getting that speed off again before the limit drops is the sequence that separates candidates who have only ever practised in town.

There is one level crossing on the loops. Drive over it once before the day so the approach, the markings and the stopping distance are familiar rather than novel.

Manoeuvres are asked for on the quieter residential roads rather than on the through routes. Those streets give you straight kerbs and enough parked cars to make a pull-up on the right worth doing properly. Nineteen schools sit inside the area the loops cover, so a mid-afternoon slot brings its own traffic.

Test day at Barnsley

The centre is on West Road, just over a mile from Barnsley Interchange, so arriving by bus or train and walking the rest is realistic if you are coming without an instructor. Most candidates do come with one.

DVSA publishes that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair. It publishes nothing about candidate parking. Treat a space outside as a bonus rather than a plan, and allow a few minutes to walk back from wherever you leave the car. That is what is typical of a centre of this size, not something confirmed for West Road in particular.

Car tests are held here, along with ADI part 2 and ADI part 3. There are no motorcycle tests at Barnsley. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK and nowhere else.

Ten minutes before your slot is early enough. Arrive much sooner and you spend the extra time standing about with other candidates, which helps nobody. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration confirming the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside at the roadside, reading a number plate, before either of you gets in.

This centre is not car only. DVSA publishes results for these categories separately, and they are taken by different candidates on different vehicles, so the rates are not comparable with the car figure above.
