Key facts
- Luton's pass rate was 39.2% in 2025/26 from 7,759 tests, 10.8 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 24 of 24 centres in East of England (East of England average 51.4%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 12.2 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 2.2 points, from 41.4% to 39.2%.
- Male candidates passed at 41.6% and female candidates at 36.6%, a gap of 5 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 10.3 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 20 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 13.3 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 3 weeks.
Luton is one of the toughest centres in the country to pass at, ranked 296 of 302, and the road layout tells you why before the statistics do. Fifty-seven signal-controlled junctions and thirty-four mini-roundabouts are tagged within two and a half kilometres of the centre, and forty-five schools sit in the same radius. The centre is on Adelaide Street in the middle of the town, so there is no estate warm-up: the routes are in dense traffic from the first junction, and stay there. Two roads in five tagged nearby are 20 mph and another two in five are 30. One practice loop on this page has fifteen right turns and fifteen left inside nine kilometres. The wait has shortened by five weeks over the year, which is the one thing moving the right way.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Density is the whole story here. Fifty-seven signal-controlled junctions and thirty-four mini-roundabouts are tagged within two and a half kilometres of the centre, which is a concentration you would expect in a much bigger city. There is one named roundabout in the area and almost nothing that qualifies as open road. Two roads in five tagged nearby are 20 mph, another two in five are 30, and the routes move between the two constantly.
The practice loops on this page run between eight and twelve kilometres, and one of them carries fifteen right turns and fifteen left. Turning right across oncoming traffic on a busy 30 with a queue building behind you is the single most repeated task of a Luton test.
Worth practising specifically before coming here:
- Mini-roundabouts taken properly at speed, signalling for the exit and going round the painted circle rather than across it, because there are more of them here than almost anywhere.
- Reading a set of signals early enough to stop rather than to accelerate, on roads where the lights come every couple of hundred metres.
- Right turns out of side roads onto Dallow Road, Buxton Road and London Road, where the gaps are short and hesitating is marked as heavily as pushing out.
- Dropping from 30 to 20 at the sign, on streets wide enough to feel like the higher limit.
Forty-five schools sit inside the same radius. Park Street, Castle Street and the residential roads off Farley Hill are where manoeuvres are usually asked for, and they are busiest exactly when afternoon slots run.

Test day at Luton
The centre is at 6 to 10 Adelaide Street, in the middle of Luton and a short walk from the station, which is about seven hundred metres away. Coming by train is practical here, and given what town-centre parking is like, it may be easier than driving in.
GOV.UK lists car tests along with ADI part 2 and part 3, so trainee instructors take tests here alongside learners.
On access, the record says only that DVSA will make arrangements for you if you have a disability. Step-free access is not published, so ring the centre in advance if you need it confirmed.
Parking is not published, and a town-centre street address of this kind rarely has dedicated candidate spaces. What is typical is that instructors set candidates down at the door and park on a nearby street or in a public car park. Build that into your timings.
Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK only.
The examiner checks your licence, asks you to sign the declaration that the car is insured for the test, and does the eyesight check on the street outside. The drive begins with a move-off into town traffic, so the first observation of the test is also one of the more demanding ones.
