Key facts

  • Letchworth's pass rate was 57.5% in 2025/26 from 5,243 tests, 7.5 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 3 of 24 centres in East of England (East of England average 51.4%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 6.1 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 2.9 points, from 54.6% to 57.5%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 25 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 12.1 weeks, so waits have grown by about 12.9 weeks.
  • 43% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Letchworth is a garden city and it is laid out like one: roundabouts instead of traffic lights. Eleven named roundabouts and thirteen mini-roundabouts sit on the practice loops on this page, against four sets of traffic signals in the whole set. It passes 57.5 per cent, 68th of the 302 centres ranked and third of the 24 centres in the East of England, and the rate has risen 2.9 points since 2021/22. The problem is getting a date. The wait is 25 weeks, up 5.6 on a year ago, while Stevenage — 7.5 kilometres away, passing 55.3 per cent — was waiting 6.7 weeks. That comparison is worth making before you book anything here.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Roundabouts, and almost nothing else. Eleven are named across the practice loops on this page — Green Lane, Pixmore Way, Norton Way South, Howard Drive, Norton Way North, Baldock Road, Station Road, Station Place, Penn Way, London Road and Letchworth Gate — with thirteen mini-roundabouts on top of them, and four sets of traffic signals in 50.7 kilometres of driving. One 10.5 kilometre loop takes in eight roundabouts.

Right turns come with them. One loop asks for fourteen right turns in 10.7 kilometres, another twelve in 7.4, and that second one is the densest turning on the set — twelve rights against only four lefts, so you are crossing traffic nearly every time you leave a road.

The mini-roundabouts are what catch people. Thirteen of them means you will meet several, and the give-way rule applies at each: look right, and do not straighten across the middle because the circle is painted rather than raised.

Twenty-five give-way junctions, nine signalled crossings and eight zebras fill in the rest. Eight zebras is a high count, and with 29 schools in the area they are in use at the times tests run.

Green Lane, Baldock Road, Pixmore Avenue, Pixmore Way, Works Road, Norton Way North, Norton Way South, Jubilee Road, Weston Way and Broadway carry the driving. Seventy-eight per cent of the distance is at 30 mph and 14 per cent at 40. No A-road appears on the loops, there is no dual carriageway, and there are no level crossings.

Test day at Letchworth

The centre is on Jackmans Place in Letchworth Garden City, SG6 1RF. Letchworth Garden City station is 1 kilometre away, an easy walk if you are meeting an instructor there.

Car tests are conducted here, and motorcycle module 2 on-road as well. DVSA will make arrangements for you at this test centre if you have a disability, which means telling them when you book rather than turning up and hoping.

Parking is not published for this site. Jackmans Place is a residential street; the spaces belong to the people who live there, so leave a few minutes to find somewhere sensible and walk the last part.

The wait was a median of 25 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, against a national 11.9, and it has grown — a year earlier it was 19.4. The first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 24 weeks ahead, which is less than the median wait: cancellations do come up here, and it is worth checking for one.

The month makes a small difference. July returned 59.7 per cent and March 54. Stevenage, 7.5 kilometres off, was waiting 6.7 weeks at 55.3 per cent. Booking, moving and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
