Key facts

  • Stevenage's pass rate was 55.3% in 2025/26 from 4,622 tests, 5.3 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 5 of 24 centres in East of England (East of England average 51.4%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 3.9 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 8.2 points, from 47.1% to 55.3%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 6.7 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 19.3 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 12.6 weeks.
  • 30.6% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Stevenage drives like the new town it is. More than four fifths of the roads mapped within 2.5 km of Drapers Way are 30 limits and barely one road in a hundred is a 20, so you spend the test at a single speed and the examiner is watching what you do at the junctions instead. There are a lot of those. The mapping shows 31 mini-roundabouts and eight named roundabouts in that radius against only 24 signalled junctions, which is an unusually low count of traffic lights, and the practice loops on this page carry between six and eleven roundabouts each. The pass rate is well above the national average and has risen since 2021, and the wait has shortened sharply over the past year.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Roundabouts do the work that traffic lights do in an older town. Only 24 signalled junctions are mapped within 2.5 km of the centre, which is low for a town this size, and against that sit 31 mini-roundabouts and eight named roundabouts including Six Hills, Gunnels Wood Road, Martins Way and James Way. The practice loops on this page take in six to eleven roundabouts each over eight to twelve kilometres. There is no long stretch on which to reset.

Fairlands Way, Lytton Way and Six Hills Way are the fast frame around the town. They are wide, they flow, and the roundabouts on them are approached at a speed that leaves little time to read the lane markings late. Getting into the correct lane early, then holding the line round to the exit without drifting, is the single most useful thing to practise before a test here.

The mini-roundabouts are a different discipline. They sit on the residential and distributor roads, they are often approached from a 30 with parked cars, and they are marked strictly. Give way to the right, signal for your exit, and keep off the painted circle.

The old town gives the contrast. High Street, Hitchin Road, North Road and the streets around them are older, narrower and busier than anything on the new town grid, with parked cars and pedestrians who cross between them.

Thirty schools are mapped in the area, so an afternoon slot is likely to meet a school run. Manoeuvres are usually set on the quieter residential roads off Clovelly Way, Primett Road and Rectory Lane, where the kerbs run straight and parking is steady on one side.

Test day at Stevenage

The centre is at 3 Drapers Way, on the industrial side of town west of the railway. Stevenage station is about a kilometre away, which is walkable, though most candidates arrive with an instructor.

GOV.UK lists car tests only here. There are no motorcycle, lorry or instructor tests. On access, DVSA publishes that it will make arrangements for you at this centre if you have a disability, but nothing is published about step-free entry, toilets or the waiting room. If you need to know what to expect at the door, ring the centre and ask. Parking is not published either, and for a unit on an estate like this the usual arrangement is bays on site or a space on the service road, which is typical rather than confirmed.

Arrive about ten minutes early. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and takes the signed declaration that the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check happens outside before you get in, and the drive starts on the estate roads, which means your first roundabout arrives within a minute or two of moving off. Booking, moving and cancelling are done only through GOV.UK.
