Key facts

  • Halifax's pass rate was 45% in 2025/26 from 5,845 tests, 5 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 25 of 27 centres in Yorkshire and The Humber (Yorkshire and The Humber average 50.4%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 5.4 points below it.
  • The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 43.9% (2023/24) and 45.6% (2021/22).
  • Male candidates passed at 48.4% and female candidates at 41.3%, a gap of 7.1 points, wider than at most centres.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 11.1 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 20 weeks ahead.
  • 32.5% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Halifax has almost no roundabouts and a great many right turns. No conventional roundabout is named within 2.5 km of the centre; twenty-nine mini-roundabouts are. Three of the five practice loops on this page ask for thirteen right turns or more, one of them sixteen. Three quarters of the roads mapped nearby carry a 20 limit and only a fifth are 30. The test here is therefore a sequence of turns out of and into slow, narrow residential streets, judged on observation and position rather than on speed. The pass rate has been steady for years at a little under half, which puts Halifax 25th of the 27 centres in Yorkshire and the Humber.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Right turns are the shape of a Halifax test. One loop on this page asks for sixteen of them in nine kilometres and another for fifteen. A right turn on a narrow 20 mph street with cars parked on both sides is genuinely hard driving: you need a gap, a view past the parked line, and somewhere to wait that does not block the traffic behind you.

Roundabouts hardly appear. Twenty-nine mini-roundabouts are mapped within 2.5 km and no conventional roundabout is named at all, so the roundabout drill most candidates rehearse is barely tested here and the mini-roundabout drill is tested constantly. Signal for the exit, give way to the right, keep left of the circle, and do not stop dead on one because you were unsure.

Wood Lane, Long Lane, Pellon New Road and Stretchgate Lane carry a good share of the routes, with Keighley Road, Wheatley Road and Ovenden Way on the longer ones, and Doctor Hill, Brackenbed Lane and City Lane on the tighter ones. Forty-three signalled junctions are mapped in the area, most of them on the bigger roads towards the town.

Forty schools sit in the same radius. In an area that is mostly 20 mph, that means the hour of your test changes the traffic you meet on the same street more than the route does. Manoeuvres are usually set on the quieter residential roads, where parking is heavy enough on one side to make a pull-up on the right worth practising properly.

Test day at Halifax

The centre is at 11 Cross Street West in Pellon, on the north-west side of Halifax. GOV.UK confirms that you can access this test centre if you use a wheelchair, which is published for only some centres and worth knowing in advance.

The tests offered are car, motorcycle module 2 on the road, and ADI part 3. There are no lorry or bus tests here. Halifax station is getting on for three kilometres away, far enough that nearly everyone arrives by car with an instructor rather than walking up from the train.

Nothing is published about candidate parking or the waiting room. The streets around the centre are residential and mostly 20 mph, so plan for what is typical there: a drop at the door and a space found on a nearby road, with a couple of minutes allowed for finding it. Booking, moving and cancelling all go through GOV.UK. Ten minutes early is plenty. The examiner checks your licence, takes the signed declaration that the car is insured, and does the eyesight check outside before you get in. The drive starts in a 20 zone, which means the first thing assessed is a move-off between parked cars.
