Despite the name, this centre is in Darwen, at the Blackburn Interchange off junction 4 of the M65, and the road layout around the interchange sets the tone. Mary Leaver Way, the link road at the centre's own door, is the first of the roundabout roads on the practice loops on this page, so you can be through two or three roundabouts inside the first two minutes. After that the loops climb. Darwen is built on hillsides, and roads such as Stopes Brow, Greenbank Terrace and Lower Eccleshill Road go up and down them with junctions part way. Three quarters of the driving is at 30 mph, but almost none of it is flat. On pass rate this is one of the harder centres in the North West, and the gradients are part of the reason.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Roundabouts are the defining feature. Four of the five practice loops on this page carry eight of them, and three of the ones you meet are mini-roundabouts rather than full ones. That mix is the difficulty. A mini-roundabout is still a roundabout: you give way to the right, you signal for the exit, and you go round the painted circle rather than over it. Drivers who treat the small ones as give-way junctions collect faults in a place where they would never expect them.
The rest of the layout is ordinary in a way that rewards ordinary discipline. There are seven sets of traffic lights across the loops and ten signalled crossings, but only one piece of traffic calming and four give-way lines. In other words the junctions are controlled, and the marks come from lane choice and observation rather than from tight spaces.
Speed is the second issue. Three quarters of the road length is at 30 mph, an eighth at 40, and there is a short stretch at the national limit where the loops touch the fast road network. The changes come at the edges of Darwen, where a built-up street opens out with the sign on a bend, and the car needs to be at the new limit before the sign rather than after it.
Blackburn Road, Roman Road, Branch Road and Duchess Street carry the town-centre part. Manoeuvres tend to be asked for on the quieter terraced streets off these, around Hollins Grove Street and Sandy Lane, where the gradient is often part of the problem and a handbrake used properly saves you.

Test day at Blackburn with Darwen
The centre sits on Commercial Road at the Blackburn Interchange, straight off junction 4 of the M65, which makes it one of the easier centres to find and one of the easier ones to arrive at flustered. Come off the motorway with time to spare and sit for a few minutes before you go in.
There is candidate parking on site. The entrance is wheelchair accessible and there are male, female and accessible toilets. Some candidates have been told to wait in the car rather than in the waiting room, so do not assume you will be sitting inside; dress for standing about if the weather is poor.
The examiner checks your licence and the insurance declaration, then the eyesight check is done outside before you get in. Car tests, motorcycle modules 1 and 2 and ADI part 3 are all conducted here, so the yard can be busy with more than cars, and tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK. The drive begins on the interchange link roads, which means a roundabout within the first minute rather than a quiet street to settle on.
