Key facts

  • Chorley's pass rate was 52.8% in 2025/26 from 5,415 tests, 2.8 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 12 of 31 centres in North West (North West average 49.0%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 3.8 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 4.5 points, from 57.3% to 52.8%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 12 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 23.8 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 9.2 weeks, so waits have grown by about 2.8 weeks.
  • 21.5% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

The shortest of the practice loops on this page is 8.8 km long and has thirteen roundabouts in it. That is the rhythm of a Chorley test: give way, choose a lane, move off, do it again. Fourteen mini-roundabouts sit within a mile and a half of the centre on Rossall Road, so a good share of those are the small painted kind that come up before you have finished reading the road.

The limits are low to match. Roughly two thirds of the roads tagged near the centre carry a 20 mph limit and most of the rest are 30. Chorley station is under half a mile away, which makes this one of the easier centres to reach without a car. The pass rate is above the national average, though it has slipped since 2021.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Roundabouts are the shape of a Chorley test. Fourteen mini-roundabouts sit within a mile and a half of the centre, alongside thirty-one sets of traffic signals, and the loops pick up a good share of both. The shortest loop, 8.8 km, has thirteen roundabout entries. The longest, 12.4 km out towards Euxton, has eight. Either way you are giving way, reading a wide entry and choosing a lane every few hundred metres.

The streets the loops lean on are Eaves Lane, Rossall Road, Preston Street, Harpers Lane, Park Road and Millennium Way. Around two thirds of the roads tagged near the centre are 20 mph, with most of the rest at 30, so the fault this produces is not speeding on an open road. It is carrying a 30 into a 20 that began at a side turning you were not watching.

There is no dual carriageway near the centre and no level crossing, so this is not a test that asks you to join fast traffic and settle into it. What it asks instead is patience: repeated give ways, short gaps, and estate roads narrow enough that oncoming traffic has to be managed. Twenty-nine schools sit inside the area the loops cover, so an afternoon slot brings the school run with it.

Manoeuvres are usually set on the quieter residential streets rather than on the through routes. If you practise one thing, make it the mini-roundabout. Signal for the exit, keep the wheels off the painted circle if the car will fit round it, and do not roll towards the give way line while you are still looking right.

Test day at Chorley

The centre is on Rossall Road, in a residential part of Chorley rather than on a business park. Chorley station is under half a mile away, so arriving by train and meeting an instructor at the door is realistic here in a way it is not at most centres.

DVSA publishes that you can access this test centre if you use a wheelchair. It publishes nothing about candidate parking or the waiting room. On a residential street of this kind, expect to leave the car on the road and walk the last part, and give yourself a few minutes to do it. That is what is typical, not something confirmed for Rossall Road.

Car tests are held here, along with ADI part 3. There are no motorcycle tests and no ADI part 2 at Chorley. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK and nowhere else.

Ten minutes before your slot is early enough. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration confirming the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside at the roadside, reading a number plate, before either of you gets in.
