Key facts
- Girvan's pass rate was 72% in 2025/26 from 250 tests, 22 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 3 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 22.7 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 12.2 points, from 59.8% to 72%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 19.9 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 13 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 14.7 weeks, so waits have grown by about 5.2 weeks.
- 64% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Girvan has the third-highest pass rate in Britain: 72 per cent, third of the 302 centres ranked and 22.7 points above the Scottish average, up 12.2 points since 2021/22. Part of that is the roads. Sixty per cent of the distance on the practice loops on this page is at 30 mph and the other 40 per cent at 60, with no roundabout named anywhere on the set, one set of traffic signals and seven give-way junctions in 49.1 kilometres. It is a small-town and open-road test with very little clutter in it. The wait is 19.9 weeks, up five on a year ago, so book earlier than the pass rate makes you feel you need to.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Two speeds and nothing else. Sixty per cent of the distance is at 30 mph and 40 per cent at 60, with no 20, no 40 and no 50 anywhere on the practice loops on this page. That makes the shape of a Girvan test simple to describe and harder to drive than it sounds: town, then open road, then town again, with the change arriving at a sign rather than gradually.
There is very little junction furniture. One set of traffic signals across 49.1 kilometres, seven give-way junctions, two mini-roundabouts, no named roundabout at all, and not one zebra or signalled crossing. Four of the five loops carry between one and three roundabouts; the 7.6 kilometre loop carries none and asks for nine right turns and twelve left instead.
So the marks go to speed and to observation, not to complexity. On the 60 stretches it is making proper progress without hurrying a bend; in the town it is what you do at an unmarked junction when there is nothing to tell you the priority.
Henrietta Street, Knockcushan Street, Bridge Street, Golf Course Road, The Avenue, George Street, Hamilton Street, Motehill Road, South Park Avenue and Church Square carry the town half, with the B734, B741 and B7022 leading out. There is no dual carriageway, there are no level crossings, and only 4 schools sit in the area.

Test day at Girvan
The centre is at the Carrick Buildings Learning Centre on Henrietta Street, KA26 9AL, in the town itself. Car tests are conducted here, along with ADI part 3.
Girvan station is 0.8 kilometres away, an easy walk, so arriving by train is realistic if your instructor is meeting you at the centre.
Parking is not published for this site. Henrietta Street is an ordinary town street with the usual restrictions; read the signs and give yourself a few minutes rather than arriving on the hour.
The wait was a median of 19.9 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, well above the national 11.9, and it has grown from 14.7 a year earlier. The first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 22.8 weeks ahead — longer than the median — so there is no easy cancellation sitting here. Book as far ahead as you can.
The alternatives are both a drive and neither is quicker. Stranraer is 38.8 kilometres away, passes 71.2 per cent and was waiting 19.2 weeks; Ayr is 31.2 kilometres off at 57.5 per cent and 13.1 weeks — sooner, but a considerably harder test on much busier roads. Booking, moving and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
