Key facts
- Abergavenny's pass rate was 64.2% in 2025/26 from 5,924 tests, 14.2 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 2 of 21 centres in Wales (Wales average 52.4%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 11.8 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 3.8 points, from 60.4% to 64.2%.
- Male candidates passed at 66.1% and female candidates at 62.2%, a gap of 3.9 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 5.9 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 12.4 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 9.9 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 4 weeks.
A third of the distance on the five practice loops here is signed at 20 mph, and almost half of it is at 60 or 70. Abergavenny is a Welsh centre with a small town in the middle and open country all round it, and the test crosses between the two more often than the mileage suggests. Monmouth Road, Merthyr Road and Ross Road take you out. Lower Monk Street, Holywell Road and Union Road West bring you back into streets narrow enough that 20 mph is the natural speed anyway. Wales lowered the default limit on restricted roads to 20 mph in September 2023, so the signs here are newer than the ones many candidates learned to read. Only one centre in Wales passes a higher share of candidates.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Fifteen per cent of the loop distance here is at 70 mph, and none of it is dual carriageway. That single fact tells you what kind of test Abergavenny is. National speed limit on a single carriageway means oncoming traffic at closing speeds, bends you cannot see round, and overtaking decisions that a dual carriageway would take out of your hands. Close to a third of the distance is at 60. Half the test, in other words, is driving that many candidates have barely done.
Give way signs do the work that traffic lights do elsewhere. There are 15 give-way junctions on the practice loops on this page and only four sets of traffic signals across the whole 57 km. Most junctions are yours to judge, which is a different pressure from waiting for a green.
Roundabouts come in bursts. Heads of the Valleys Road, Merthyr Road and Monmouth Road are the loop roads that carry them, and one of the shorter loops takes in eleven roundabouts in under ten kilometres. Two mini-roundabouts sit among them, and minis reward an early decision: choose the exit on the approach, signal for it, and steer round the painted circle rather than over it.
The town half is slower and much tighter. Lower Monk Street, Gipsy Lane and Alexandra Road are the sort of streets where the 20 mph limit describes what is possible rather than restricting it, and two traffic-calming features sit on the loops. Manoeuvres are asked for away from the main roads.
Two things you will not meet: a level crossing and a dual carriageway. Neither appears anywhere on these loops.

Test day at Abergavenny
The centre is on Station Road. It runs car tests and ADI part 3 only, so there are no motorcycle tests and no ADI part 2 here.
One thing about Abergavenny is worth knowing in advance: tests are not always taken from the Station Road building. DVSA has previously moved a run of tests out to Abergavenny Rugby Football Club at Bailey Park, and published the change in the centre's own record rather than anywhere you would trip over. Read the address on your booking confirmation instead of assuming it. Arriving at the right town and the wrong building still counts as a missed test.
Nothing about wheelchair access is published for this centre. That is not the same as there being none, but it does mean you should ring DVSA before the day if you need step-free entry or any other arrangement, rather than turning up and hoping.
Candidate parking is not published either. A small-town centre of this sort usually has a few spaces and a good deal of on-street parking within a short walk, which is typical rather than confirmed. Booking, moving and cancelling a test all happen through GOV.UK.
