Key facts
- Newport's pass rate was 48.9% in 2025/26 from 8,227 tests, in line with the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 18 of 21 centres in Wales (Wales average 52.4%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 3.5 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 3.4 points, from 52.3% to 48.9%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 6.2 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 12.8 weeks ahead.
- 20.2% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Nine level crossings sit within a couple of miles of the Newport centre. That is an unusual number, and it comes from where the place is: Liswerry, between the docks, the sidings and the main line east. A stop at a barrier is a realistic part of a longer drive here, and so is the approach to one, which is where candidates get caught out. Wales dropped the default limit on restricted roads to 20 mph in September 2023, and roughly two thirds of the tagged roads around the centre now carry that limit. The rest is quicker than that suggests: nearly one road in five is 40 or 50, because the industrial estate roads and the A4042 are close by. The pass rate is one of the lower ones in Wales and has slipped since 2021.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Spytty Road appears on most of the practice loops on this page and sets the tone. It is a wide estate road with retail traffic, lorries turning across you and roundabouts strung along it, and the temptation on a road that size is to treat the roundabouts as formalities. They are marked whether or not anything is coming.
Roundabouts are the backbone of the driving here. Spytty Roundabout, Nash Road, Church Street, Ringland Way and Docks Way all turn up, along with ten mini-roundabouts inside the same radius, and one of the loops takes in six roundabouts in under thirteen kilometres. Lane choice before the approach matters more than anything you do on the roundabout itself.
The speed picture is mixed in a way most Welsh centres are not. About two thirds of the roads nearby are 20 mph under the default that came in during September 2023, but nearly one in five is 40 or 50, and there is dual carriageway close by on the A4042. You can go from a 20 mph residential street to a 50 mph link road inside a few minutes, and the change of gear and of eye level is where speed faults appear.
Then there are the crossings. Nine level crossings sit within a couple of miles, several of them on the freight lines around the docks. If you meet one, treat it as a junction: read the signals early, stop behind the line, do not creep, and do not start moving until the barrier is fully up.
Signs are bilingual, Welsh above English, and mean exactly what the English underneath says.

Test day at Newport
The centre is on Stephenson Street, off Corporation Road in Liswerry, on the industrial side of the river rather than in the city centre. Allow for the approach: the estate roads are used by lorries all day and the turn in is easy to miss at the speed the traffic runs.
DVSA lists car tests, ADI part 3, and both motorcycle modules here, module 1 off-road and module 2 on the road. Motorcycle testing means the site is busier than a car-only unit and that some of the space is in use for the off-road module, so do not expect a quiet car park.
Nothing is published about accessibility at this centre. If you use a wheelchair or need step-free access, ring ahead rather than assuming.
Waiting facilities are not in the DVSA record either. A unit on a working estate normally has little more than a small waiting area, which is typical, so plan to wait in the car with your instructor.
Waits here are shorter than the national median, at around six weeks in July 2026, and close to a quarter of the slots in the booking window were still unbooked. If your date does not suit, a swap through the GOV.UK booking service is realistic rather than hopeful.
