Key facts
- Brecon's pass rate was 58.7% in 2025/26 from 1,490 tests, 8.7 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 5 of 21 centres in Wales (Wales average 52.4%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 6.3 points above it.
- The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 58.7% (2025/26) and 60.1% (2021/22).
- Male candidates passed at 63.1% and female candidates at 53.7%, a gap of 9.4 points, wider than at most centres.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 6.9 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 9 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 13.4 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 6.5 weeks.
Brecon swings between extremes. Forty-three per cent of the distance on the practice loops on this page is at 20 mph and 21 per cent at 70, with only 7 per cent at 30 — the limit most tests are built on barely appears here. There is no dual carriageway on the set, so the 70 is single-carriageway road with oncoming traffic on it. It passes 58.7 per cent, 53rd of the 302 centres ranked and fifth of the 21 in Wales, and the wait has come right down: 6.9 weeks against 12.4 a year ago, one of the shortest anywhere. Men pass here at 63.1 per cent and women at 53.7, a gap of 9.4 points that is wider than at most centres.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
The speed profile is unlike almost anywhere else. Forty-three per cent of the distance is at 20 mph, 20 per cent at 40, 10 per cent at 60 and 21 per cent at 70, and only 7 per cent at 30. What that means in practice is that the middle gear you spend most of a normal test in barely comes up. You are either crawling through the town at 20 or out on national-limit road, and the change between them arrives quickly.
That 70 is single-carriageway, not dual. Overtaking is not required and not expected; what is marked is whether you make progress on it without hesitating, and whether you have slowed before the limit drops rather than after.
Junctions are mostly give-ways: 25 of them across the practice loops on this page, against six sets of traffic signals. Newgate Street, Cerrigcochion Road, Hoggan Park, Bailhelig Road and Watton carry the named roundabouts, and there are four mini-roundabouts as well. One 6.3 kilometre loop packs in ten right turns and ten left, the densest turning on the set; an 8.7 kilometre loop has no roundabout at all and asks for fourteen left turns.
Camden Road, Watton, Cerrigcochion Road, Heol Gouesnou, Canal Road, Bulwark, Rich Way and Beacons Close carry most of the driving, with the B4558 and B4602. Three zebra crossings and four signalled crossings cover the pedestrian side, there are 8 schools in the area, and no level crossings on the set.

Test day at Brecon
The centre is on Camden Road, LD3 7RT, in the town itself rather than on an estate outside it. Car tests are conducted here, along with ADI part 3. DVSA will make arrangements for you at this test centre if you have a disability — say so when you book, not on the day.
No railway station is close enough to be useful, so everyone arrives by car or with an instructor.
Nothing is published about parking. Camden Road is a town street; treat the spaces as ordinary town parking, check the signs and give yourself time to walk the last part rather than circling.
The wait was a median of 6.9 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, well under the national 11.9, and the first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 8.5 weeks ahead. It has improved a lot: a year earlier the median was 12.4 weeks.
October returned 62.8 per cent and August 56.2, so the summer is the harder half of the year here. Abergavenny is 29.1 kilometres away, passes 64.2 per cent and was waiting 5.9 weeks — better on both counts if you are willing to learn different roads. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
