Key facts

  • Monmouth's pass rate was 51% in 2025/26 from 1,283 tests, in line with the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 16 of 21 centres in Wales (Wales average 52.4%), one of the lower pass rates in the region.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 5.4 points, from 56.4% to 51%.
  • Male candidates passed at 49.1% and female candidates at 53.1%, a gap of 4 points.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 11.6 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 5.8 weeks ahead.

Monmouth has no railway station, and that shapes who takes a test here: nearly everyone arrives by car, and the town's roundabouts are the first thing a route touches. St James' Square, St Thomas's Square and the Rockfield Road roundabout sit within a few hundred metres of each other, with four mini-roundabouts filling the gaps, and one loop on this page passes through nine of them. Most of the streets around the centre are 20 mph under the Welsh default, so the ordinary rhythm of a Monmouth drive is slow, then a roundabout, then slow again. The pass rate is close to the national figure but among the lower ones in Wales, and it has slipped over the last few years.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Roundabouts are the spine of every route here. St James' Square and St Thomas's Square are the two in the middle of town, Rockfield Road is the third, and four mini-roundabouts sit between them. Loops on this page take in as many as nine roundabouts in twelve kilometres, which is a lot of approach, observation and exit signalling in a short drive. Get the lane discipline and the exit signal right and most of a Monmouth test looks after itself.

Around seven in ten of the roads tagged near the centre are 20 mph, the Welsh default on restricted roads. That matters more than it sounds. The drop from a 50 back into a 20 happens at the sign, not after it, and the streets that carry it, Monk Street and Cinderhill Street among them, are also the narrow ones, with parked cars and people stepping out between them.

The other half of the driving is the faster ground. The A466 runs south along the Wye through Redbrook Road, and Staunton Road climbs east; both give a proper 50 or 60 stretch, and both come back into the town limit sharply. Portal Road and Old Dixton Road are the quieter roads by the centre and where manoeuvres tend to be set.

One thing not to do is practise in the centre's own car park. DVSA has published that it is off limits for parking exercises, and it is the sort of rule that gets noticed on the morning of a test.

Test day at Monmouth

The centre is on Old Dixton Road, off Dixton Road on the north-east side of Monmouth. Two things DVSA publishes about it change what you do on the day. The first is that the car park must not be used to practise parking exercises, so a last-minute bay park on site cannot be part of your warm-up. The second is that DVSA will make arrangements here for candidates with a disability, which is more than most centres of this size publish. Say what you need when you book rather than on the morning.

Car tests and instructor part 3 tests run here. Everything is booked, moved and cancelled on GOV.UK.

There is no station in Monmouth, so almost everyone comes by car and the journey in needs planning. Nine schools sit inside the area the loops cover, and the roundabouts in the middle of town are slow at the school run.

Abergavenny is the nearest alternative centre, about thirteen miles away, with a higher pass rate and a shorter wait. Worth knowing if your instructor teaches on both sides.
