Key facts

  • Hereford's pass rate was 58.8% in 2025/26 from 4,110 tests, 8.8 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 1 of 26 centres in West Midlands (West Midlands average 46.2%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 12.6 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 2.4 points, from 61.2% to 58.8%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 5.6 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 23.4 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 11.7 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 6.1 weeks.

Hereford has the highest car pass rate of any test centre in the West Midlands, and by a wide margin: 58.8 per cent against a regional average nearer 46. It also has one of the shorter waits in the country, a little over five weeks in mid-2026, which is why learners travel in from a long way out. The centre is at 1 Faraday Road on the Westfield Trading Estate, north-west of the city, and the driving is city driving from the moment you turn out of the estate: mini-roundabouts in runs, a great many traffic lights, and the roads that carry through traffic round the north of Hereford. The rate has been drifting down for a few years, so read the number as generous rather than easy.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Fifteen mini-roundabouts sit within the area the loops cover, and they are the single feature that decides most Hereford tests. They come in runs, several within a few hundred metres of each other around Newtown Road, Yazor Road and the streets near Edgar Street, and the mistakes repeat: no signal for the exit, a signal given too late for the driver behind to read it, and driving over the painted dome instead of round it.

Beyond them this is a 30 mph centre. Nearly four roads in five inside the area are 30, with about a fifth at 20 in the residential streets, and there are twenty-six schools in the same area, more than most centres this size. The practice loops on this page run about 52 kilometres over five routes and take in Roman Road, Three Elms Road, Whitecross Road and Grandstand Road on most of them.

The exceptions are worth practising on their own. City Link Road is dual carriageway, and the A438 and A465 carry through traffic at a pace unlike the rest of the drive; joining and leaving them cleanly, in the right lane, is the part learners rehearse least. Holmer Roundabout is the busiest conventional roundabout the loops touch.

Thirty-six sets of traffic signals lie within the area. Lights that close together mean box junctions, stop lines, and the pull to follow the car in front through a late amber.

Test day at Hereford

The centre is at 1 Faraday Road on the Westfield Trading Estate, an industrial park off Grandstand Road on the north-west side of the city. GOV.UK is explicit about one thing here: you cannot access this test centre if you use a wheelchair. If that affects you, speak to DVSA before you book rather than on the day.

Hereford station is just under a mile away, so it is walkable at a push, though nearly everyone arrives with an instructor. Parking is not published for this unit. On estates like Westfield the safe assumption is that the bays immediately outside belong to the centre and to the businesses either side, so plan to leave the car a short walk along the estate road.

Car tests, motorcycle module 2 on-road and ADI part 3 are all taken from here. Inside, the examiner calls you by name, checks your licence, and has you sign to confirm the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside before you get in.

Booking, rescheduling and cancelling all go through GOV.UK and nowhere else.
