Almost everything you drive around Llanishen is a 20 mph road. Wales dropped the default limit on restricted roads to 20 in September 2023, and within a couple of miles of this centre more than four in five tagged roads now carry that limit. It changes what the test asks of you. Less judging gaps at speed, more holding a low speed accurately, reading bilingual signs and picking the right gear on short links between junctions.
The centre sits in Cardiff Business Park, north of the city, a working estate of offices and light industry rather than a high street. Its pass rate is among the lower ones in Wales, and the reasons are mostly visible from the car park.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Four in five tagged roads within a couple of miles of the centre are 20 mph. The rest is mostly 30, with a trace of 40 and 50 and no dual carriageway anywhere. The driving is slow, dense and junction-heavy rather than fast. There are around sixty-five sets of traffic lights in that radius and seventeen mini-roundabouts, and the mini-roundabouts are where marks go. They arrive quickly, the give way is to the right, and a hesitant approach on a 20 mph road holds up everything behind you.
The bigger roundabouts have names your instructor will use. Gabalfa Interchange is the one to respect, a multi-lane junction where the lane has to be chosen well before you reach it. Thornhill Road, The Gateway and King George V Drive are more ordinary but still need a decision made early.
The street names are Welsh and the signs are bilingual, Welsh above English. Parc Tŷ Glas, Tŷ Glas Road, Rhyd-Y-Penau Road and Heathwood Road all turn up in the practice loops on this page. If you learned in England the words look unfamiliar, but each sign means what the English underneath it says, and the shapes and symbols are the ones you already revised.
Forty-three schools sit inside the same area. From about half past three the residential streets fill with parked cars and children, and 20 mph stops being a formality. The loops here run ten to twelve kilometres and are heavy with right turns, which is the shape of the driving: turn, junction, turn again.

Test day at Cardiff
The centre is a unit on Lambourne Crescent, inside Cardiff Business Park, and it looks like every other office door on the estate. There is no shopfront to spot from a moving car, so find the unit number rather than trusting the postcode.
Parking for candidates is on site. Space is finite on a working business park, so leave a few minutes in hand and let your instructor choose the bay. Toilets are provided, male, female and accessible. Past that, treat the facilities as basic. Sources differ on whether there is anywhere to sit inside, which is typical of a leased unit, so plan to wait in the car. If you need step-free access, ring the centre before the day rather than finding out on it.
Tŷ Glas station is about four hundred metres away, one of the shortest walks to any centre in Wales.
The estate is busiest at the start and end of the office day, with vans reversing out of loading bays. A mid-morning slot buys you a calmer car park and a calmer first two minutes. Waits here run near three months, though over a quarter of slots in the booking window were still unbooked in July, so watching for a cancellation is worth the effort.
