Warndon is built on roundabouts, and the Worcester test centre is in the middle of it. The busiest of the practice loops on this page takes in fourteen roundabouts in about six and a half miles, and the quietest still manages eight. Woodgreen Drive, Warndon Way, Brindley Road and Berkeley Way account for most of them. Nothing else about this test is unusual, which is rather the point: if you can read a roundabout early, choose a lane and hold it, Worcester will suit you, and if you cannot, the routes give you no long straight stretch to hide on. Beyond the estates the loops reach the ring road and the lanes out towards Hindlip and Offerton. Worcester passes rather more candidates than most West Midlands centres.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Count on a roundabout every few minutes. Every one of the practice loops on this page has at least eight, and many sit close enough together that the exit of one is the approach to the next. That is the thing to rehearse: not a single roundabout from a standing start, but three in a row, where the signal for the last exit and the observation for the next entry overlap.

The one that matters most is Warndon Island, a large, busy roundabout close to the centre that most routes touch at some point. The Warndon roundabouts are also mostly multi-lane. Lane choice has to be made on the approach, from the road markings and the signs rather than from what the car in front is doing, and the lane has to be held all the way round. Drifting wide on the exit is the fault that this layout produces more than any other.

The ring road supplies the fast driving. Joining it, holding a lane at a higher limit and leaving it again is on most of the loops, and the drop back into a built-up limit afterwards is where speed creeps.

Away from the estates the loops use Pershore Lane and the lanes towards Hindlip and Offerton, which are narrower, unlit in places and bendy enough that the safe speed sits well below the limit. Blackpole Road and Cotswold Way link the two halves. Manoeuvres are usually asked for inside the Warndon estates, where the streets are wide, the kerbs straight and there is normally somewhere sensible to pull up on the right.

Test day at Worcester

The centre is on Stanier Road in Warndon, on an industrial estate on the north-eastern edge of Worcester. Candidate parking is available on site. Male and female toilets are inside. Accounts of step-free access disagree, and at least one describes the building as having no ramp, so if you use a wheelchair or find steps difficult, say so when you book rather than on the day. DVSA make separate arrangements for candidates with a disability.

The estate roads around Stanier Road are wide and used by lorries, so give yourself room when you park and again when you pull away with the examiner beside you.

Inside, the examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the insurance declaration. The eyesight check happens outside, reading a number plate at the roadside, before you get into the car. Car tests, motorcycle module 2 and ADI part 2 and part 3 are conducted here.

Worcester's railway stations are all a good way from Warndon, so most candidates arrive by car. The wait for a slot here runs longer than at many centres, so book early rather than hoping to move a date, and tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK. The drive begins on the industrial estate and reaches the first Warndon roundabout quickly.
