Key facts

  • Cheltenham's pass rate was 43.2% in 2025/26 from 5,161 tests, 6.8 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 19 of 21 centres in South West (South West average 51.7%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 8.5 points below it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 6.9 points, from 50.1% to 43.2%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 13.5 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • 27.1% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Thirty-eight mini-roundabouts sit within a couple of miles of the centre on All Saints Road, alongside fifty-seven sets of traffic lights. That is a dense, junction-rich town by any measure, and the results reflect it. Cheltenham is among the lower pass rates in the South West and has fallen by nearly seven points since 2021.

Pittville Circus is the landmark junction and it gives its name to two of the roads the practice loops on this page use most. Four A-roads, a B-road and a stretch of dual carriageway run through the area, along with five level crossings and forty-two schools inside the same radius. Almost three quarters of the mapped roads are 30 mph and another sixth are 40, so the pace is steady rather than slow. The loops run between about five and eight miles.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Mini-roundabouts are the defining feature. Thirty-eight of them lie within a couple of miles of the centre, which is a very high count for a town this size, and they turn up on the residential roads as well as the main ones. They are the junction candidates most often treat as a give-way and get marked for: the rule is still give way to the right, signal for the exit you are taking, and drive round the painted circle rather than over it.

Signals do the rest. Fifty-seven sets sit inside the same radius, so on London Road, Hewlett Road and Prestbury Road you rarely get a clear run of more than a few hundred metres. Pittville Circus and Pittville Circus Road carry the busiest of the loops, and Millbrook Roundabout, Saint James' Roundabout and Manor Road are among the other named junctions. Reading the lane markings early matters more than reading the lights.

Five level crossings and forty-two schools share the area. That is an unusual combination and it means the time of your slot changes the drive noticeably. A mid-morning test and a half past three test are not the same test on these roads.

Almost three quarters of the mapped roads are 30 mph, with about a sixth at 40 and only a small share at 20, so the pattern is a steady pace broken constantly by junctions rather than long slow stretches. Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the quieter residential roads such as Oakley Road, Clarence Road and Portland Street, where kerbs are straight and parking on one side gives you something to work against.

Test day at Cheltenham

The centre is in Bishopsgate House at 94 All Saints Road, an office building rather than a standalone unit, so the door you want is the one with the number on it. GOV.UK publishes no access line for Cheltenham beyond saying DVSA will make arrangements for candidates with a disability. If you need step-free entry or anything else specific, ring the centre before the day. It runs car tests and ADI part 3 only, so there are no motorcycle tests and no ADI part 2 here.

Neither parking nor public transport is published here, so most candidates arrive with an instructor. For an office building on a residential road the usual pattern is a drop-off at the door with the car left on a nearby street, which often means restricted bays. Leave ten minutes for that.

The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration confirming the car is insured. The eyesight check is done outside on All Saints Road before you get in, and the drive starts with a move-off into live traffic. Booking, moving and cancelling all go through GOV.UK. The wait has shortened by about five weeks over the past year, so a nearer date is more gettable than it was.
