Key facts

  • Nelson's pass rate was 51.7% in 2025/26 from 5,955 tests, 1.7 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 17 of 31 centres in North West (North West average 49.0%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 2.7 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 4.8 points, from 56.5% to 51.7%.
  • Male candidates passed at 56.2% and female candidates at 47.2%, a gap of 9 points, wider than at most centres.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 19.7 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 6.1 weeks, so waits have grown by about 13.6 weeks.

The hardest part of a Nelson test is now booking it. Candidates who sat a test here in July 2026 had waited a median of 19.7 weeks, against about twelve nationally, and a year earlier the same figure was 4.7 weeks. When you do get in the car, the driving is slow and tight. Four in five tagged roads within a couple of miles of the centre are 20 mph, and the terraced grid around Carr Road and Netherfield Road is most of that: narrow streets, parked cars on both sides, give ways every few hundred metres. There are 21 mini-roundabouts in that radius and only 24 signalled junctions, which tells you how the junctions are shaped. The pass rate sits just above the national average and has drifted down since 2021.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Nelson is a 20 mph test. Four in five of the tagged roads within a couple of miles carry that limit, and the ones that do not are mainly the through routes: Manchester Road, Halifax Road and Barkerhouse Road. Most of the driving happens on the streets in between, where the terraced grid gives you junction after junction with almost no run-up between them.

Holding an accurate 20 is a skill in itself. Too fast and it is a speed fault; too slow and you are holding up the car behind and inviting a mark for undue hesitation. The gear matters as much as the speed, because third at 20 on a slight rise will have you labouring into a give way.

There are 21 mini-roundabouts in that radius, a high number for a town this size, and they are the feature to prepare for. They come up quickly, the give way is to the right, and the painted circle is to be driven round rather than over. The larger ones have names your instructor will use, including Reedyford Interchange, Pendle Roundabout and Colne Roundabout, and those want the lane chosen well before the approach.

Two level crossings sit inside the same area, so a stop at a barrier is possible on a longer loop. There are 31 schools as well, which changes the residential streets completely from mid afternoon.

The loops on this page run from about eight to twelve kilometres, and the busiest of them packs in 17 right turns. Right turns across oncoming traffic on a narrow 20 are the single thing worth drilling before you come here.

Test day at Nelson

The centre occupies ground floor units in Pendle Business Centre on Commercial Road, a converted block rather than a purpose-built DVSA office. Look for the unit numbers on the ground floor, not for a sign on the road.

Nelson station is about 300 metres away, a short walk, so arriving by train is genuinely practical here if your instructor is meeting you at the door.

Parking is not covered in DVSA's record for this centre. Business centre parking is usually shared with the other tenants and fills up during the working day, which is typical, so let your instructor pick the spot and leave a few minutes in hand rather than assuming a space outside. Accessibility is not published either. If you use a wheelchair or need step-free access, ring before the day.

The centre offers car tests and ADI part 2 and part 3. There is no motorcycle testing here.

Given the wait, treat a booked slot as hard to replace. Check the booking service for cancellations if you want to move it, and remember that moving or cancelling is done only through GOV.UK.
