Key facts
- Northwich's pass rate was 57.6% in 2025/26 from 3,529 tests, 7.6 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 6 of 31 centres in North West (North West average 49.0%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 8.6 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 2.5 points, from 60.1% to 57.6%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 19.1 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 16.4 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 16 weeks, so waits have grown by about 3.1 weeks.
- 47.2% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Northwich is a 20 mph town with a great many traffic lights in it. Seven in ten of the roads tagged around the centre are 20s, there are thirty-two signal junctions in the same area, and twenty schools, which is a lot to watch inside a short drive. The test centre itself is at Winnington, on the industrial edge north-west of the town, so routes start on wide works roads and are into the town's 20s within a couple of minutes. The pass rate is comfortably above the North West average, which says something about how people are taught for these roads. The wait is the problem: around four and a half months.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
The two halves of a Northwich route feel different. Winnington Lane, Winnington Avenue, Penrhyn Road and Felix Road are the works roads by the centre: wide, quiet in places, with heavy vehicles turning in and out and few parked cars. Moss Road and Burrows Hill link that side to the town.
Then you are into the 20s, and they are most of the area. Seven in ten of the tagged roads are 20 mph, so the discipline is holding a genuine 20 without either drifting up on a straight or crawling and getting marked for hesitation. Chester Way and Chester Road carry the town-centre traffic through the thirty-two sets of lights spread across the area, and that is where the amber decisions come. One of the loops on this page has twenty right turns in eleven kilometres, most of them at lights or into side roads across oncoming traffic.
Two level crossings sit within the area the loops cover. They are not on every route, but if you get one you get the whole sequence: stop, wait, move off with traffic behind you.
Davenham Roundabout and St Wilfrids Roundabout are the two conventional roundabouts, with five mini-roundabouts elsewhere. Armitage Way, Parry Avenue, Monarch Drive and Stephenson Street are the quieter residential and retail roads, and the usual ground for manoeuvres. Twenty schools sit inside the same area, which in term time means crossing patrols and parked cars where you least want them.

Test day at Northwich
The centre is at 4 Felix Road in Winnington, on an industrial estate on the north-west side of Northwich. It is a small unit rather than a landmark, and Felix Road is easy to overshoot, so look up the approach the night before.
DVSA publishes that this centre cannot be accessed if you use a wheelchair. If access matters to you, raise it when you book and ask what the alternatives are. Warrington is the nearest other centre.
Car tests run here, along with instructor part 2 and part 3 tests, so the examiners here also assess instructors. Booking, moving and cancelling are through GOV.UK.
Nothing is published about candidate parking. On an estate like this one there is usually room on the surrounding roads, and that is what instructors generally rely on rather than a space at the unit itself. Arrive early enough to sit for a few minutes before you go in.
If you are coming by train, Greenbank is the nearer station, a little over half a mile away, rather than Northwich itself.
