Key facts
- Bedford's pass rate was 53.7% in 2025/26 from 8,854 tests, 3.7 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 7 of 24 centres in East of England (East of England average 51.4%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 2.3 points above it.
- The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 49.9% (2024/25) and 56% (2022/23).
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 27.1 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 17 weeks, so waits have grown by about 10.1 weeks.
- 34.5% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Bedford asks for a wider range of speeds than most town centres do. About a tenth of the road length on the practice loops sits at 70 mph, on the dual carriageway of The Great Ouse Way and the A6 north of the town, and another 13 per cent runs at 40. The rest is ordinary 30 mph work, with 15 per cent in 20 mph zones near the schools.
Candidates who have only driven in traffic find the fast stretches uncomfortable; candidates who have only driven the bypass get caught out in Tavistock Street. The pass rate sits a little above the national average and has done for years. The wait is the harder part of booking here, and it has been growing.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Three roads carry most of a Bedford test. Clapham Road runs north out of the town and appears on two of the five practice loops; Manton Lane takes you past the centre itself; Bromham Road heads west towards the river. Between them they hold the bulk of the 30 mph driving, which is 58 per cent of the route length.
Bedford is a town of traffic lights rather than roundabouts. The practice loops on this page carry 23 sets of signals across 52.8 km, plus 16 signalled crossings and 12 zebras. Tavistock Street and the streets around it are where they cluster: lights in sight of each other, a crossing between them, and no room to make up a hesitant start. There are also 15 give-way junctions, which is where most emerging faults are marked.
The roundabouts are a mixed bag. Four of them are mini-roundabouts, on the residential roads at Roff Avenue, Waveney Avenue and Lovell Road, and the conventional ones at Park Avenue, Shakespeare Road and The Great Ouse Way are much larger. Treat the two kinds as different junctions, because they are.
Longer loops leave town on Brickhill Drive or The Great Ouse Way, where the limit rises to 70 and the dual carriageway sections start. Joining and leaving at speed, and keeping left when nothing needs overtaking, is what those add. There are 40 schools inside the area the routes cover, so a mid-morning slot in term time will meet a school run somewhere.

Test day at Bedford
The centre is inside Bedford Heights on Manton Lane, north west of the town. It is a large shared office site rather than a building of its own, so follow the signs once you are through the entrance instead of looking for a shopfront from the road.
This is one of the busier centres for test types. Car tests run alongside motorcycle module 1, which is the off road part, motorcycle module 2, and both ADI part 2 and part 3. Module 1 needs a marked manoeuvring area, so there is hard standing on site beyond the visitor bays, and it may well be in use while you are waiting for your slot.
DVSA confirms the centre is accessible if you use a wheelchair.
Candidate parking is not published. A shared office site of this size normally has visitor bays that fill up through the morning, so arrive with a few minutes in hand rather than counting on a space near the door.
The wait here is long, a little over six months at the last count, so a booked slot is worth protecting. Moving or cancelling is done only through GOV.UK.

What examiners mark most often
DVSA does not publish faults by centre, but it does publish them nationally. These collected the most marks across every car test in Great Britain in 2025/26, and they are the same ones you will be marked on at Bedford.
