Key facts

  • Guildford's pass rate was 57.1% in 2025/26 from 4,542 tests, 7.1 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 7 of 30 centres in South East (South East average 52.9%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 4.2 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 14.3 points, from 42.8% to 57.1%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 9.6 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 13.8 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 15.1 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 5.5 weeks.
  • 27.3% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Guildford has improved more than almost any centre in the country. The pass rate has risen 14.3 points since 2021 and now stands at 57.1 per cent, seventh of the 30 centres in the South East. The driving is a mix of two things that do not usually sit together: roundabouts in quantity, with up to ten on a single one of the practice loops on this page, and a large share of 40 mph road. More than a fifth of the roads in the area are 40, against two thirds at 30. The centre is on the Slyfield industrial estate north of the town, so routes open on Moorfield Road and Woking Road and reach out towards Jacobs Well and Worplesdon.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

The area within two and a half kilometres of the centre holds 49 signal-controlled junctions and 17 mini-roundabouts, alongside conventional roundabouts at Woodbridge Road, Stoke Road, Clay Lane, Aldershot Road, London Road and Woodway. Those counts describe the roads around the centre rather than one route, but the practice loops on this page pick up plenty of them: four of the five carry eight or more roundabouts across nine to thirteen kilometres.

What makes Guildford different from other roundabout-heavy centres is the speed on the approach. Over a fifth of the roads in the area are 40 mph, so a good number of those roundabouts are joined from a 40 rather than a 30. The observation has to be made earlier, the lane has to be chosen from the sign rather than at the line, and the drop from 40 to a stop needs to be smooth rather than late and heavy.

Left turns are strangely scarce on some of the routes. Two of the loops carry ten right turns and only one left, which means long sequences of waiting for gaps in oncoming traffic. If you get flustered holding position at a right turn while a queue builds behind you, that is the thing to rehearse.

One loop breaks the pattern entirely: it takes in a stretch of Blanchards Hill, carries only two roundabouts, and is made up of ordinary turns instead. There is one level crossing in the area and 24 schools, which is worth thinking about if your slot falls at three in the afternoon.

Test day at Guildford

The centre is on the Slyfield Industrial Estate, off Moorfield Road on the northern edge of Guildford. It is an estate address, so follow Moorfield Road in rather than looking for a frontage on the main road.

This is a bigger operation than most car test centres. GOV.UK lists car tests, lorry and bus tests, and ADI parts 2 and 3. Expect large vehicles manoeuvring on site, and keep clear of the areas they are using when you arrive. GOV.UK also publishes that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair.

Parking is not published. Industrial estate units of this kind usually have bays outside and room on the estate roads, which is typical rather than confirmed, so allow a few minutes to park properly.

London Road station is a little over two kilometres away, walkable at a push but not convenient, and most candidates arrive with an instructor. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK only.

The examiner checks your licence, asks you to sign the declaration that the car is insured for the test, and does the eyesight check on the estate. The estate roads are wide and quiet, and then the first roundabout puts you into the traffic on Woking Road.
