Farnborough is a roundabout test. There are 47 roundabout manoeuvres across the five practice loops on this page, in about 58 km of driving, which is roughly one every kilometre and a quarter. No other skill gets asked for anything like as often.

The reason is the ground. The centre is a unit on Hercules Way, inside the business park built around the old aerodrome, and the estate is laid out as wide boulevards joined by roundabouts rather than as a street grid.

None of which makes it a hard centre. Farnborough passes 59.7 per cent of its candidates, fifth of the thirty centres in the South East and well above the national average. The roundabouts are relentless, but they are well built and well signed, and candidates who have practised them do well here.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

The roundabouts are the test, and around this centre they have names your instructor will use:

  • Clockhouse and Queens Gate, the two large multi-lane ones
  • Monkey Puzzle and Meadowgate, on the approaches to the estate
  • Summit, Willems and Sulzers, out towards the wider network
  • Gladiator Way, close in

Aerospace Boulevard, Hercules Way, Government House Road, Queens Gate Road and Trenchard Way link them together. What these roads have in common is width. They are engineered with long approaches and more than one lane, which means the decision has to be made early and then held. Changing lane on the roundabout itself is the fault this layout produces most often, and it is almost always caused by choosing the lane too late rather than by not knowing the rule.

Away from the boulevards the picture is ordinary. Nearly three quarters of the tagged roads within a couple of miles of the centre are 30 mph, and about one in seven is 20. Alexandra Road, Elles Road, Templer Avenue, Fowler Avenue and Berkshire Copse Road carry that part of the driving, and the manoeuvres are usually set on streets of this kind.

Left and right turns come out almost equal here, which is unusual. The route does not favour one over the other. It simply keeps handing you roundabouts and asking whether you sorted out the lane in time. If you practise one thing before a Farnborough test, make it reading a roundabout's lane markings from a distance, at the speed the approach road actually carries.

Test day at Farnborough

The centre is Unit C1 in the Cirrus building, 35 Hercules Way, off Aerospace Boulevard. It is an office unit on a modern business park, so there is no shopfront to spot from the road and the unit number is what you need.

Parking is the one thing sources do not agree on. Accessible bays sit at the main entrance, and general parking is described as being a short distance before the centre on the right, but other pages say candidate parking is not provided at all. Plan for what is typical of a leased unit on an estate like this. Assume a space may not be free, let your instructor drop you at the door and park separately, and leave a few minutes in hand. Male and female toilets are available inside.

Farnborough Main station is a little under three kilometres away, so it is a bus ride or a lift rather than a walk.

Business park traffic peaks at the start and end of the working day, with delivery vehicles reversing across the boulevards. A slot in the middle of the day gives you quieter roundabouts for the opening minutes, which on this route is exactly where you want them. Waits run longer than the national median, though they have shortened over the past year.
