Key facts

  • Burton on Trent's pass rate was 54.7% in 2025/26 from 7,273 tests, 4.7 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 4 of 26 centres in West Midlands (West Midlands average 46.2%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 8.5 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 6.5 points, from 48.2% to 54.7%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 17 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • 44.9% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

One of the practice loops on this page takes in fourteen roundabouts in seven miles. The other four manage between eight and eleven each, which tells you most of what a Burton test involves. The centre is on Wellington Park, off Wellington Road, and the roads leading away from it run out to Branston Interchange and Evershed Roundabout. This is not all town driving either: about one road in eight within a couple of miles carries the national limit, and there is dual carriageway within reach, so a fast stretch is likely rather than possible. Burton has one of the higher pass rates in the West Midlands and it has climbed by more than six points since 2021. The wait is the trade-off. It has been running well above the national median.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Roundabouts are the shape of a Burton test. Every loop on this page carries at least eight and the busiest has fourteen, so they arrive faster than you can think about them one at a time. The habit that saves you is doing the work early: read the sign, pick the lane, get the speed down on the approach, then look right and go. Where they come in series, as they do on the way out to Branston Interchange, the exit of one is the approach to the next and there is no time to settle.

The older part of town is a different problem. Anglesey Road, Shobnall Road, Union Street and Cambridge Street are narrower, with parked cars reducing them to a single working lane in places and side turnings close together. Meeting oncoming traffic between parked cars is routine rather than occasional, and deciding early who gives way is what gets marked.

About one road in eight within a couple of miles is a national limit road and there is dual carriageway in the area, so at some point you will be joining faster traffic and leaving it again. Two level crossings sit inside the same radius. Eighteen schools do as well, which is worth knowing if your slot falls near the start or end of the school day.

Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the quieter residential roads such as Riverside Drive and Warren Lane. The loops run between about six and eight miles, so there is very little warm-up before the first roundabout.

Test day at Burton on Trent

The centre is on Wellington Park, a small business estate off Wellington Road. Burton-on-Trent station is about a mile and a half away, far enough that most candidates arrive with an instructor rather than walking from the train. GOV.UK records that you can access the centre if you use a wheelchair. It is a full centre by the standards of a town this size, running car tests, motorcycle modules 1 and 2, and ADI part 2 and part 3.

Candidate parking is not published. Units on estates like this one usually have some bays, though not always at the front and not always enough on a busy morning, so treat the space as typical rather than guaranteed and leave a few minutes for it.

Aim to be there about ten minutes before your slot. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration confirming the car is insured for the test, and the eyesight check is done outside on the estate before you get in. Booking, moving and cancelling all happen through GOV.UK. Waits at Burton have been long, so if a date is offered that you can drive to comfortably, it is usually worth taking.
