Key facts
- Basildon's pass rate was 49.1% in 2025/26 from 8,359 tests, in line with the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 16 of 24 centres in East of England (East of England average 51.4%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 2.3 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 2.2 points, from 51.3% to 49.1%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 4.8 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- 27.3% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Basildon was built to keep traffic moving, and the test reflects that. Nearly half of the road length on the practice loops on this page sits under a 50 mph limit, on the wide distributor roads that ring the estates: East Mayne, Upper Mayne, Cranes Farm Road and Nevendon Road. Those roads are linked by roundabouts rather than by ordinary junctions, so a lot of the test is judging a gap at speed and holding a lane through it. The residential half is quieter than in most towns, because the new town puts its houses behind the main roads rather than along them. It is a busy centre, with over 8,000 tests a year. The pass rate has slipped a little since 2021 and now sits just under the national average, and the wait is short by national standards.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
East Mayne and Upper Mayne do the heavy work. They are fast, they are linked by roundabouts, and the practice loops on this page put between six and eleven roundabouts into a single loop of eight to thirteen kilometres. There is no long stretch of ordinary 30 mph road to settle into. Only about a quarter of the route length is 30, with the rest split between 40 and 50, so the speed changes come often and they are signed rather than obvious.
Approach lane is the fault line here. On the bigger roundabouts, choosing a lane late and then correcting inside the roundabout is what gets marked, and it happens because candidates arrive faster than they expected to. Take the lane before the give way line, hold it round, and signal off in good time.
Cranes Farm Road, Nevendon Road, Whitmore Way and Christopher Martin Road carry most of the rest. Between them the loops hold 19 sets of traffic lights and 14 signalled crossings, and in places a crossing sits just after a roundabout exit, which is where late braking shows up.
There are four mini-roundabouts as well, mostly on the estate roads. Treat them as roundabouts and not as give ways: the observation and the exit signal are marked whether or not anything is coming.
Manoeuvres are usually set on the quieter roads inside the estates, off Honywood Road and around The Fremnells and The Hatherley, where the kerbs are straight and parking is heavy on one side.

Test day at Basildon
The centre is on Paycocke Road, in the commercial and industrial belt north of the town centre rather than in the shopping end of town. DVSA publishes that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair, which is more than it says about many sites.
Parking is not covered in the official record. Units of this kind usually have a small number of bays and they fill up early, so the safe plan is the ordinary one: arrive with time in hand, and expect to leave the car on the estate road and walk the last part if the bays outside are taken. Ten minutes before your slot is enough. Much earlier than that and you are standing about with other candidates, which does nobody's nerves any good.
The centre runs car tests, motorcycle module 1 and module 2, and ADI part 3, so on some days you will be sharing the site with motorcycle candidates. Booking, moving and cancelling a test are done only through GOV.UK.
The examiner checks your licence, takes the signed insurance declaration and does the eyesight check outside before you get in. Basildon station is about two miles away, so most candidates arrive with an instructor rather than by train.
