Key facts

  • Blackpool's pass rate was 51.8% in 2025/26 from 8,948 tests, 1.8 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 15 of 31 centres in North West (North West average 49.0%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 2.8 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 4 points, from 47.8% to 51.8%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 8.9 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 14.2 weeks ahead.

Blackpool is one of the easier centres in the North West to get a date at. A third of the standard slots in the booking window were still free in the summer, the median wait sat under nine weeks against a national figure of about twelve, and the pass rate has climbed four points since 2021. None of that is true of Preston or Southport up the coast, where the pass rates are higher but the waits are roughly twice as long. The test itself is not a promenade test. The centre sits at the south end of the town by the airport, and the loops run into the residential grid of St Annes rather than along the front, so trams and holiday traffic are barely part of it.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Mini-roundabouts are the signature of this area. There are 17 of them in the streets the loops use, against only two conventional roundabouts, Royal Oak on Common Edge Road and the one at Parkinson Way. Any test from here is likely to meet several in a row, and the faults they produce are always the same two: no signal on the exit, and a wheel across the painted circle when the road looks empty.

The other thing to know is the speed limit. Around 55 per cent of the tagged streets within a mile and a half of the centre are 20 mph, and only 6 per cent run at 40. That is a low-speed test with a lot of junctions in it, which is harder than it sounds. Holding 20 without drifting takes deliberate work, and examiners see the drift on every straight.

Squires Gate Lane and Clifton Drive North are the two roads that break the pattern. Both are wider, both carry buses, and both feed the residential streets where manoeuvres are usually asked for: Abbey Road, Headroomgate Road, Highbury Road East and the smaller roads off St Annes Road. Fletcher Drive and Christal Avenue are the same kind of street on the Blackpool side, while Amy Johnson Way and Avroe Crescent are the wide, quiet estate roads at the door, so the drive normally starts calmly. There is one level crossing inside the area the routes cover; stop behind the line if the lights start, and do not try to beat the barrier.

Test day at Blackpool

The centre moved in April 2026, and getting that right matters more here than at most centres. Tests now run from Unit 8 in The Pavilions on Avroe Crescent, on the business area beside Blackpool Airport at Squires Gate. A lot of older listings, and some sat navs, still point at the previous site on the other side of town. Set the postcode, check the unit number, and do not trust a page you found last year.

The address is easier to find than the door. Units here look alike, so allow a couple of minutes to walk the row rather than arriving on the hour and hunting.

Parking for candidates is not something DVSA publishes for this site. On an estate unit of this kind there are normally shared bays for the whole terrace rather than reserved test centre spaces, so treat a space as likely rather than promised and let your instructor decide where to leave the car.

DVSA does confirm you can get into this centre if you use a wheelchair. Car tests, motorcycle module 2 and ADI part 3 are conducted here. Booking, moving and cancelling a test is done only through GOV.UK.
