Key facts
- Heysham's pass rate was 59.2% in 2025/26 from 3,692 tests, 9.2 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 4 of 31 centres in North West (North West average 49.0%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 10.2 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 7.7 points, from 51.5% to 59.2%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 18.1 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 17.2 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 12.9 weeks, so waits have grown by about 5.2 weeks.
- 26.8% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Almost four fifths of the roads tagged within two and a half kilometres of the Heysham centre are 20 mph. That is an unusually high share, and it sets the tone. This is a test of holding a low limit accurately over long stretches rather than of reading fast traffic. The centre is an office inside a training company's premises on Penrod Way, on the industrial side of the village. Eight level crossings sit within the same radius, far more than at most centres. The practice loops on this page run between eight and twelve kilometres, taking in Middleton Road, Trumacar Lane and the streets behind Main Street. The pass rate is well above the national average and has been rising since 2021, though the wait is longer than the national median.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
The speed profile is the thing here. Around 78 per cent of the roads tagged within two and a half kilometres of the centre are 20 mph and 18 per cent are 30, with almost nothing above that. A test can spend most of its length inside a 20 zone, and that changes what gets marked. Drifting into the high twenties because the road looks wide is the common fault. So is dropping to 15 through a line of parked cars and staying there long after the road has cleared.
Junction furniture is sparse. Only five mini-roundabouts and three sets of traffic signals are tagged in the area, and the practice loops on this page pick up one to three roundabout entries each. The named one is on the Heysham Bypass. What replaces the roundabout work is turns: the loops carry between seven and thirteen right turns apiece, most of them emerging from side roads onto through routes like Port Way, Middleton Road and Main Street, where the gap you need is longer than it looks at 20.
Eight level crossings sit within the same radius, which is a lot for an area this small. If one comes up, approach at a speed that lets you stop, and never move onto the crossing without a clear exit on the far side.
Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the residential streets off Trumacar Lane, Bailey Lane and School Road. They are 20 mph, straight-kerbed and parked on one side, which makes a pull-up on the right worth practising properly before the day.

Test day at Heysham
The centre is Office 106 at Lancaster Training Services, 5 Penrod Way, which means the DVSA unit is a room inside somebody else's building rather than a block of its own. Look for the training company's name on the way in. GOV.UK publishes that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair, and the site runs car tests, motorcycle module 2 on the road and ADI part 3.
Parking is not published. Industrial units of this kind normally have bays on the plot and room on the estate roads, which is typical rather than confirmed. Give yourself a few minutes to find a space and walk in.
Arrive around ten minutes before the slot. The examiner checks your licence, has you sign the insurance declaration and does the eyesight check outside. The first part of the drive is on Penrod Way and Port Way, wide and usually quiet, which is exactly where a 20 mph limit is easiest to drift over.
Waits here run to eighteen weeks, so a cancelled test is expensive. Nearly a quarter of the slots in the booking window were still free in the most recent month, which makes a swap or an earlier date realistic if you keep checking. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
