Key facts
- Chelmsford's pass rate was 55.4% in 2025/26 from 9,107 tests, 5.4 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 4 of 24 centres in East of England (East of England average 51.4%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 4 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 3.7 points, from 51.7% to 55.4%.
- Male candidates passed at 56.9% and female candidates at 53.7%, a gap of 3.2 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 17 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 14.4 weeks, so waits have grown by about 2.6 weeks.
Chelmsford is a good centre to pass at and a hard one to get into. It passed 55.4 per cent of its candidates in 2025/26, 5.4 points above the national average and fourth of the twenty-four centres in the East of England. The catch is the wait: learners who tested in July 2026 had waited a median of seventeen weeks. Car tests now run from the County Hotel on Rainsford Lane rather than the old site. The drive itself is roundabouts. Ten named ones sit on the practice loops on this page, between four and eight on each of the five, and twenty-seven per cent of the distance is at 40 mph.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Ten named roundabouts sit on these loops: Parkway, High Bridge Road, Springfield Road, Parkinson Drive, Writtle Road, New Street, Manor Road, Van Dieman's Road, Waterson Vale and Princes Road. Each of the five practice loops on this page carries between four and eight of them, in ten to thirteen kilometres.
That is the shape of a Chelmsford test. The junction work is circular rather than stop-and-look: three mini-roundabouts and only twelve give-way junctions across the whole set.
The lights matter as well. Forty-one sets of traffic signals, thirty-one signalled crossings and ten zebras, which for a town this size is dense. A good part of the drive is spent deciding whether to go.
Speeds are mixed in a way that catches people out. Sixty-two per cent of the distance is at 30 mph and twenty-seven per cent at 40, with only nine per cent at 20. Moving between the 30s and the 40s, and remembering which one you are on, is where the marks go.
The streets that recur are Rainsford Road, High Bridge Road, Springfield Road, Coval Lane, Kings Road, New London Road, Chignal Road, Broomfield Road, Primrose Hill, Arbour Lane and Redmayne Drive.
No A-roads appear on the loops at all and there is no dual carriageway, so there is no long fast stretch to settle into. There is one level crossing in the area and thirty-seven schools.

Test day at Chelmsford
Car and ADI tests are held at The County Hotel, 29 Rainsford Lane, CM1 2PZ, and have been since late June 2026. Lorry and bus tests booked at Chelmsford run from a training site at Wickford instead, so check your booking if you are testing anything larger than a car.
Chelmsford station is under half a kilometre away, which makes this one of the easier centres in the country to reach without driving to it.
Nothing is published about parking at the hotel or about step-free access, so ring the centre in advance if you need either arranged.
The wait is the catch. A median of seventeen weeks for tests taken in July 2026, against 11.9 weeks across Great Britain and 12.1 weeks here a year earlier, and the first week with a tenth of its appointments still free was twenty-four weeks out. Basildon and Brentwood are both within twenty kilometres and both were waiting under five weeks, though both pass a lower share of their candidates than Chelmsford does. That is the trade to weigh. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
