Key facts

  • Shrewsbury's pass rate was 51% in 2025/26 from 5,064 tests, in line with the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 12 of 26 centres in West Midlands (West Midlands average 46.2%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 4.8 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 3.1 points, from 47.9% to 51%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 6.3 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 16.4 weeks ahead.
  • 22.3% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Shrewsbury's centre is on Stafford Drive in Battlefield Enterprise Park, and the estate is ringed by roundabouts. Four of the five practice loops on this page pass eleven or twelve of them in about ten or eleven kilometres, and there are only eight signalled junctions within two and a half kilometres of the centre. Roundabouts do the job here that traffic lights do elsewhere, and the approach lane is where the test is won or lost. Four fifths of the roads mapped nearby are 30 mph, but a tenth are 60, because the town runs out into open country quickly in this direction. The pass rate has risen since 2021 and now sits around the national average, and the wait is shorter than the national median.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

The first roundabout comes almost immediately. Knights Way, Battlefield Way and Battlefield Link Road tie the enterprise park together, and Enterprise Roundabout, Battlefield Roundabout, Sundorne Roundabout and Heathgates Roundabout are the named junctions in the area. They are wide, modern and often empty, which is exactly why they catch people out. The observation and the signal are marked whether or not anything is coming.

Ellesmere Road and Harlescott Lane carry the older, busier half. These are 30 mph roads with side turnings close together, shops, bus stops and parked cars. Four fifths of the roads mapped within two and a half kilometres of the centre are 30 mph, so most of a Shrewsbury test happens at that speed and most of the observation faults happen there too.

The exception is the country edge. A tenth of the roads nearby are 60 mph, and Huffley Lane runs out into it. National speed limit on a road that is narrow, unlit and bordered by hedges means the correct speed is well below the limit, and the examiner is watching for a driver who reads the road rather than the sign. There is a level crossing in the area as well.

Manoeuvres are usually set on quieter roads such as Boscobel Drive, Westbury Road and Mount Pleasant Road, where the kerbs are straight and there is parking on one side. Shrewsbury Road and Battlefield Road appear on the longer loops. The loops run from ten to a little over eleven kilometres, so there is very little warm-up before the first roundabout.

Test day at Shrewsbury

Battlefield Enterprise Park is a working industrial estate, so expect lorries turning in and out of the units around the centre on Stafford Drive while you are trying to leave. That is part of the test rather than a distraction from it.

The centre runs the full range: car tests, motorcycle module 1 off-road and module 2 on the road, and ADI parts 2 and 3. Module 1 means there is a manoeuvring area on site which will often be in use by riders, so do not treat it as extra parking or as somewhere to rehearse a bay park.

DVSA publishes nothing about wheelchair access, a waiting room or toilets at Shrewsbury. Ring the booking line ahead of the day if you need to know, rather than assuming either way.

Parking is not published either. Estate units of this kind normally have bays, which is typical rather than certain, and instructors often park in them and walk candidates to the door. Give yourself a few minutes.

The examiner checks your licence, takes the signed insurance declaration and does the eyesight check outside on the estate before you get in the car. Waits here have shortened by about seven weeks over the past year, and everything to do with booking a test goes through GOV.UK.

This centre is not car only. DVSA publishes results for these categories separately, and they are taken by different candidates on different vehicles, so the rates are not comparable with the car figure above.

What examiners mark most often

DVSA does not publish faults by centre, but it does publish them nationally. These collected the most marks across every car test in Great Britain in 2025/26, and they are the same ones you will be marked on at Shrewsbury.
