Key facts

  • Oswestry's pass rate was 52.4% in 2025/26 from 1,851 tests, 2.4 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 8 of 26 centres in West Midlands (West Midlands average 46.2%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 6.2 points above it.
  • The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 48.8% (2022/23) and 55.6% (2024/25).
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 11.4 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 10.8 weeks ahead.

Four level crossings sit on the practice loops on this page, which is more than almost any test area in the country. The rest of an Oswestry test is turns: one 11.6 kilometre loop asks for 16 right turns and 13 left with no roundabout on it at all, and only one roundabout is named across the whole set. Fifty-eight per cent of the distance is at 30 mph, but 19 per cent is at 50 and 18 at 60, on the lanes out towards Trefonen Road and Nant Lane. It passes 52.4 per cent, 142nd of the 302 centres ranked but eighth of the 26 in the West Midlands, 6.2 points above a low regional average. The wait is 11.4 weeks.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Start with the level crossings. There are four on the practice loops on this page, and most candidates have never stopped at one under test conditions. The rule is simple and the fault is common: stop behind the line, do not creep, and do not start moving because the lights have stopped flashing but the barrier is still down. Ask your instructor to take you over each of them once.

Turning is the other half of it. Two of the five loops carry no roundabout at all, and those two are the busiest for turns — 16 right and 13 left in 11.6 kilometres on one, 14 right and 10 left in 11.7 on the other. One roundabout is named on the whole set, on Shrewsbury Road, with three mini-roundabouts besides, and there are 25 give-way junctions against five sets of traffic signals. You are choosing your own moment nearly every time.

The speeds are wider than a market town suggests: 58 per cent of the distance at 30 mph, 19 per cent at 50 and 18 per cent at 60, on the lanes out to Trefonen Road, Nant Lane and Croeswylan Lane. There is no dual carriageway, so the fast road is single-carriageway with oncoming traffic.

Maesbury Road, Shrewsbury Road, Salop Road, Middleton Road, Lower Brook Street, Roft Street, Aston Way and Longueville Drive carry the rest, with the B4579, B4580 and B5069. Twelve pieces of traffic calming and 9 schools sit in the area, and there is one zebra crossing on the set.

Test day at Oswestry

The centre is on the Mile Oak Industrial Estate, Maesbury Road, SY10 8GA, south of the town. Car tests are conducted here, along with ADI part 3, the examiner's test for instructors.

Nearly everyone arrives by car or with an instructor. The nearest station listed is Weston Wharf, 0.4 kilometres away, but do not plan a journey around it without checking what actually runs.

DVSA publishes nothing about parking at this site. Industrial estate roads usually have space; the marked bays belong to the units, so leave a couple of minutes to walk in.

The wait was a median of 11.4 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, close to the national 11.9, and the first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 12.8 weeks ahead. That is one of the few places where the two figures nearly match, which means the booking system here is not badly backed up.

March returned 56.9 per cent and July 51.6. If the date is what matters, Shrewsbury is 23.3 kilometres away at 51 per cent and 6.3 weeks, and Wrexham 22.7 kilometres at 51.9 per cent and 7 weeks — near-identical pass rates for roughly half the wait. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.

What examiners mark most often

DVSA does not publish faults by centre, but it does publish them nationally. These collected the most marks across every car test in Great Britain in 2025/26, and they are the same ones you will be marked on at Oswestry.
