Key facts

  • Scarborough's pass rate was 45.1% in 2025/26 from 3,595 tests, 4.9 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 24 of 27 centres in Yorkshire and The Humber (Yorkshire and The Humber average 50.4%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 5.3 points below it.
  • The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 45.1% (2025/26) and 51.7% (2024/25).
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 7 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 21.4 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 9.1 weeks, so waits have shortened by about 2.1 weeks.

Scarborough passes 45.1 per cent of its candidates, 258th of the 302 centres ranked and twenty-fourth of the twenty-seven in Yorkshire and The Humber. The practice loops on this page are all one speed: every kilometre of the fifty-six is at 30 mph. There are only two named roundabouts across the whole set, no zebra crossings and no traffic calming at all — the work is ordinary turning, ten or eleven right turns on the busier loops. The one thing clearly in Scarborough's favour is the queue: a seven-week median wait, well under the national 11.9.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Every kilometre of these loops is at 30 mph. Not a stretch at 20, not a stretch at 40 — one hundred per cent of the distance at a single speed, which is rarer than it sounds and changes what the drive asks of you. There is no open road to settle into and no 20 zone to slow you down. The speed is decided, and the rest is junctions.

Roundabouts barely feature. Two named ones, Stepney Road and Valley Road, plus four mini-roundabouts, and three of the five practice loops on this page contain no roundabout at all. What those loops contain is turning: eleven right turns and eight lefts on one, ten and nine on the longest.

Eight sets of traffic signals and eight signalled crossings, with no zebra crossings and no traffic calming anywhere on the set. Five give-way junctions. For a seaside town the road furniture is unusually light — most of what you meet is a plain junction you have to read for yourself.

The A64, A165, A170 and A171 all appear, with the B1364 and B1427, and there is a dual-carriageway section. Seamer Road, Lismore Road, Ingle Close, Stepney Road, Valley Road, Stoney Haggs Rise, Queen Margaret's Road, Filey Road, Seamer Moor Lane, Stepney Hill and The Esses carry the driving. There are no level crossings, and twenty schools in the area.

The wait is the good news. A median of seven weeks for tests taken in July 2026, against 11.9 weeks across Great Britain, and the first week with a tenth of its appointments still free was 11.5 weeks out — early by national standards. If you want a date rather than the best odds, Scarborough gives you one.

The odds are the other side of it. Malton is twenty-eight kilometres away, passes 64.3 per cent against Scarborough's 45.1, and was waiting ten weeks. That is nineteen points for three extra weeks and a drive inland. Bridlington passes 55.5 per cent at twenty-four kilometres; Whitby 56.7 per cent, but it was waiting nineteen weeks.

Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.
