Key facts

  • Widnes's pass rate was 42.7% in 2025/26 from 6,846 tests, 7.3 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 28 of 31 centres in North West (North West average 49.0%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 6.3 points below it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 7.2 points, from 49.9% to 42.7%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 6.9 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 17.4 weeks ahead.

Widnes is one of the very few centres where mini-roundabouts barely exist. There is a single one in the whole area, against eight conventional roundabouts, and that flips the usual advice. The skill being tested here is lane choice and observation on a full-size roundabout, not the painted-circle discipline most learners drill. Three of the five practice loops on this page have no roundabout on them at all and are made entirely of turns, sixteen rights on one. Just over half the roads tagged nearby are 20 mph. The pass rate has fallen since 2021 and now sits below the North West average, but the wait is short and a quarter of the slots in the booking window were still free this summer.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

The roundabouts here are the real kind. Eight named ones sit in the area, among them Newstead Farm Interchange and the Prescot Road, Lingwell Avenue, Galway Avenue, Lanark Gardens and Desoto Road roundabouts, and there is exactly one mini-roundabout in the whole radius. That is close to unique. At most centres the mini-roundabouts outnumber the conventional ones several times over. Here the preparation that pays is approach lane, lane discipline through the circle, and a signal timed to the exit.

Two of the practice loops on this page use those roundabouts, four apiece. The other three have none at all and are built from turns instead: sixteen right turns on one, twelve on two more. Ditchfield Road, Ditton Road and Newstead Road carry that work, and it comes densely, because the loops are short. The whole set runs between 7.8 and 10.5 km.

Just over half the roads tagged nearby are 20 mph and another thirty-seven per cent are 30. Hale Road, Liverpool Road and Coronation Drive are the busier stretches. Only twenty-four sets of traffic signals sit in the area, which is low, so most junctions are give-way and the decision is yours rather than a light's.

There is faster driving at the edges. A small share of the roads nearby carry 60 and 70 limits, and where a loop reaches them the change of pace is abrupt after streets that have been 20 for ten minutes.

Two level crossings sit in the area and only twelve schools, so the low limits here are residential rather than school-driven, which means they apply all day and not just at the ends of it.

Test day at Widnes

The centre is on Everite Road, an industrial road on the western side of Widnes. It is a unit on the estate rather than a building with its own frontage, so allow a minute to find it rather than expecting a sign from the main road.

Car tests are conducted here along with ADI part 2 and part 3. Nothing is published about wheelchair access or other arrangements, so if you need step-free entry, or anything agreed in advance, ring the centre rather than assuming.

Parking is not published either. Estate units of this kind normally have bays on site shared with the neighbouring businesses. Take that as typical rather than confirmed and arrive with time to look.

Hough Green station is about a kilometre away, a walk of roughly fifteen minutes, though most candidates still arrive with an instructor.

The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration that the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside on the estate road. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK.

Booking here is comparatively easy. The median wait ran under seven weeks this summer, and a quarter of the standard slots in the booking window were unbooked, so a cancellation or a fresh date is realistic here.
