Key facts
- Hull's pass rate was 47.9% in 2025/26 from 9,706 tests, 2.1 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 18 of 27 centres in Yorkshire and The Humber (Yorkshire and The Humber average 50.4%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 2.5 points below it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 4.4 points, from 52.3% to 47.9%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 14 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- 27.6% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
One of the practice loops on this page runs 11.0 km and takes in 15 roundabouts. Another manages 12 in under ten kilometres. That is the Hull test in a sentence: a roundabout every few hundred metres, most of them mini-roundabouts on ordinary residential roads rather than the big named islands. The centre is on Reservoir Road off Clough Road, north of the city, and the routes work the streets between Clough Road, Stoneferry Road and the estates east of them. Almost none of it is fast. Roughly two-thirds of the roads around the centre are 30 mph and a third are 20. Hull passes a little under half its candidates, close to the national average but below the Yorkshire and Humber figure, and the wait has been growing.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Mini-roundabouts are the defining feature. There are 19 of them in the streets around the centre against only four conventional named islands, Roebank, Southcoates, Mytongate and the one on Margaret Moxon Way. On the practice loops on this page the counts run from seven to 15 per loop. A mini is not a formality: the signal for the exit, the look to the right and the discipline of steering round the painted circle rather than over it are all being marked, and doing it well fifteen times in a row is harder than doing it once.
Traffic lights come almost as often. There are 67 signalled junctions in the area, so a route strings together lights and minis with very little plain road between them. The faults this produces are creeping over a stop line, being in the wrong gear when a light changes early, and losing the exit lane on a roundabout because the next junction is already in view.
Speeds stay low. About two-thirds of the roads mapped near the centre are 30 mph and a third are 20, with only a sliver at 40. There is dual carriageway within reach on the A63 and A1033 for the longer routes, but the bulk of a Hull test is town driving at town speeds. The risk is drifting a few miles an hour over a 20 limit, not anything dramatic.
Forty-nine schools sit inside the area the loops cover, so a mid-afternoon slot brings parked cars, buses and children crossing. Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the residential streets off Leads Road and West Carr Lane, where kerbs are straight and there is parking on one side.

Test day at Hull
The centre is on Reservoir Road, off Clough Road in the north of the city. Hull Paragon Interchange is under three kilometres away, so bus or train and a short journey on is workable if you are coming without an instructor, though most candidates arrive with one.
DVSA publishes that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair. It publishes nothing about candidate parking or the waiting room. A space near the door is normal at a centre of this size but it is not promised, so allow a few minutes to park on a nearby street and walk back rather than circling as your slot approaches.
Car tests are held here, along with motorcycle module 1 off-road, motorcycle module 2 on-road, ADI part 2 and ADI part 3. Booking, moving and cancelling a test is done through GOV.UK and nowhere else.
Ten minutes before your slot is early enough. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the declaration confirming the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside at the roadside, reading a number plate, before either of you gets in. The drive then starts by joining Clough Road traffic, which is rarely quiet.
