Key facts

  • Greenock's pass rate was 41.7% in 2025/26 from 3,547 tests, 8.3 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 64 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 7.6 points below it.
  • The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 41.4% (2022/23) and 43.6% (2021/22).
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 9 weeks since booking (shorter than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
  • 22.5% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Greenock is a hard centre, and worth knowing that before you book. The pass rate is 41.7 per cent, which places it 64th of the 67 centres in Scotland. Nothing about the road layout looks exotic. There is no dual carriageway within two and a half kilometres, no level crossing and only one mini-roundabout. What there is instead is dense town driving: 89 per cent of the roads in the area are 30 mph, the rest mostly 20, and the practice loops on this page ask for as many as 15 right turns each. The centre is on Union Street in the middle of town, so the routes start in traffic rather than easing into it.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

This is junction work, not speed work. Almost nine roads in ten within two and a half kilometres of the centre are 30 mph and the remainder are mostly 20. There is no dual carriageway in the area and no level crossing. What the routes give you instead is a high count of decisions in a short distance, on town streets where parked cars and turning traffic leave little room to reposition.

Right turns are the recurring theme. The practice loops on this page ask for between nine and 15 right turns each across six to thirteen kilometres. A right turn out of a side street on to Robertson Street or Inverkip Street means judging a gap in two directions, holding position without blocking the road behind, and going when the gap comes. Hesitation is marked here as surely as a rushed decision, and on the shortest loop the turns come one after another with no recovery time between them.

Roundabouts are few and mostly conventional: Dellingburn Street, Laverock Avenue, Inverkip Street and the Bullring. Only one mini-roundabout is tagged in the area, so if you have been drilling mini-roundabouts, spend the time on signalled junctions and priority turns instead. There are 16 signal-controlled junctions in the same radius.

Manoeuvres tend to be set on the residential streets away from the centre, off Drumfrochar Road and the roads above the town. With 16 schools in the area, those streets are at their most congested at the start and end of the school day.

Test day at Greenock

The centre is at 19A Union Street, a town-centre address rather than an estate unit, so look for the number rather than a DVSA building set back from the road.

GOV.UK lists car tests only at this centre. There are no motorcycle tests and no ADI tests here, which keeps the site quieter than a multi-purpose centre on the day.

Nothing is published about wheelchair access, so access is not published. If you need to know what the building can accommodate, ring DVSA before your test rather than finding out on the morning.

Parking is not published either. Town-centre units of this kind normally depend on on-street parking or a public car park nearby, which is typical rather than confirmed, so arrive with enough time to park properly and walk back.

Greenock West station is under a kilometre away, so this is a centre you can reach by train. Tests are booked, moved and cancelled through GOV.UK only.

The examiner checks your licence, asks you to sign the declaration that the car is insured, and does the eyesight check outside. Then you move off into town traffic straight away. The median wait here is around nine weeks, but real choice of slots sits much further out, so book early.
