Key facts

  • Forfar's pass rate was 60.3% in 2025/26 from 667 tests, 10.3 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 24 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), a mid-table pass rates in the region, 11 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 8.5 points, from 68.8% to 60.3%.
  • Male candidates passed at 62.7% and female candidates at 58.1%, a gap of 4.6 points.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 24.1 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 13 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 15.4 weeks, so waits have grown by about 8.7 weeks.

Forfar passes 60.3 per cent, 42nd of the 302 centres ranked and 11 points above the Scottish average, though that is down 8.5 points on 2021/22. The wait is the problem: 24.1 weeks, up 9.1 in a single year, one of the longest in Scotland. Dundee is 19.7 kilometres away and was waiting 8.8 weeks, which is a comparison worth making before you commit. The driving itself is turns rather than roundabouts — no conventional roundabout is named anywhere on the practice loops on this page, and one 9 kilometre loop asks for fourteen right turns and thirteen left. Fifty-nine per cent of the distance is at 30 mph and 16 per cent at 20.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

This is a test of turning. No conventional roundabout is named anywhere on the practice loops on this page, and four of the five loops carry none at all — what they carry instead is junctions, one after another. A 9 kilometre loop asks for fourteen right turns and thirteen left; an 8.6 kilometre loop asks for eleven and thirteen; an 11.8 kilometre loop for ten and fourteen. Across 48.2 kilometres there is barely a stretch where you are not approaching one.

Five mini-roundabouts and seven sets of traffic signals do what joining there is, with four give-way junctions and five signalled crossings. The mini-roundabouts are worth a lesson on their own: the give-way rule applies, and at a town junction with cars waiting on three arms it is the looking rather than the steering that gets marked.

The speeds are slow and they change often. Fifty-nine per cent of the distance is at 30 mph, 16 per cent at 20 and 4 per cent at 15, with 17 per cent at 60 on the roads out towards Brechin and Dundee. There is no dual carriageway on the set.

St. James Road, New Road, Academy Street, South Street, Market Street, Castle Street, Brechin Road, Dundee Road, Lour Road and Victoria Street carry nearly all of it, with the A926 and A932 and the B9113, B9128 and B9134 beyond the town. Nine pieces of traffic calming sit among them, there are 5 schools in the area and no level crossings.

Test day at Forfar

The centre is at Unit 1 at the Asda supercentre on New Road, DD8 2AE. That surprises people the first time: the test starts from a supermarket site, with the shop's own traffic coming and going around you. Get there early enough to look at the layout before you are driving it under test conditions.

Car tests only are conducted here. DVSA will make arrangements for you at this test centre if you have a disability, which means telling them when you book.

No station is close enough to be practical, so everyone arrives by car or with an instructor. Parking is not published; a supermarket car park usually has a time limit, so read the signs rather than assuming, and leave the car where an overrunning test will not cost you a ticket.

The wait was a median of 24.1 weeks for tests taken in July 2026, double the national 11.9, and it has grown by more than nine weeks in a year — the July 2025 median was 15. The first week with a tenth of its slots still free was 20.3 weeks ahead.

Monthly figures move a lot on small numbers, but the pattern is real: October returned 54.5 per cent from 66 tests and April 78.2 per cent from 87. Dundee is 19.7 kilometres away, passes 57.3 per cent and was waiting 8.8 weeks. Booking and cancelling is on GOV.UK only.
