  • Montrose's pass rate was 70% in 2025/26 from 621 tests, 20 points above the national average of 50.0%.

  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 8.2 points, from 78.2% to 70%.

The test centre in Montrose is part of the fire station on Garrison Road, which is the first thing to get straight, because candidates looking for a shop-front unit drive past it. What follows is one of the slowest test areas in the country: close to eight in ten of the roads tagged around the centre are 20 mph, and almost all the rest are 30s. There is very little fast driving on a Montrose route. What there is instead is town work, seven mini-roundabouts, tight streets between the basin and the sea, and a great many turns. Montrose has one of the ten highest pass rates in Britain, though it has come down from where it was five years ago.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Montrose sits between a tidal basin and the North Sea, and the road layout follows that. Routes work along Ferry Road, Wharf Street, Lower Hall Street and Provost Reid's Road on the harbour side, then out along Marine Avenue and Craig Road towards the front. It is a lot of turning in a small area: one loop on this page has seventeen right turns in under ten kilometres.

The 20 mph limit covers most of it. With so little 30 or 40 left, the risk is the opposite of the usual one. Not creeping over a limit, but sitting at 20 where the road opens up and is signed higher, which reads as undue hesitation.

Three conventional roundabouts carry the through traffic: Ferryden, Basin View and Inch Terrace. Seven mini-roundabouts sit inside the town. Rossie Island Road takes the A92 south over the water and the A935 runs west along the basin, and those are where you meet lorries and holiday traffic at a real speed for the first time on a route.

Further out, Usan Road is the rural edge, narrow and unmarked in places, the sort of road where meeting an oncoming vehicle is a decision rather than a formality. Burnside Place, Craig Crescent and the streets off Basin View are quieter, and are where manoeuvres are usually set.

Test day at Montrose

The address is 10 Garrison Road, and the centre shares its site with Montrose fire station. Give yourself time to find it and to park somewhere sensible. This is a working fire station, and the last place to be is in the way of an appliance coming out.

One published detail matters before you book. This centre cannot be accessed if you use a wheelchair. If that affects you, raise it with DVSA at the booking stage rather than on the day, and ask what they can offer at Arbroath or Forfar instead.

Car tests only are run here. No motorcycle or lorry tests, and no instructor tests are listed. Booking, moving and cancelling are done on GOV.UK.

Montrose station is about half a mile from the centre, an easy walk if you are coming up or down the coast by train. Waiting times here are long, close to five months at the median with the first genuinely open week further out again, so treat the appointment as difficult to replace. Nothing is published about parking or facilities at the centre itself.
