Key facts
- Arbroath's pass rate was 67.4% in 2025/26 from 605 tests, 17.4 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 12 of 67 centres in Scotland (Scotland average 49.3%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 18.1 points above it.
- Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 9.7 points, from 57.7% to 67.4%.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 25.9 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 17.5 weeks, so waits have grown by about 8.4 weeks.
- 51.7% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
The Arbroath test starts in a supermarket car park. The centre is at the Asda on Westway Retail Park, off Dundee Road, so the first thirty seconds of the drive are spent among shoppers, trolleys and cars reversing out of bays. After that it becomes a give-way test. There are 59 give-way junctions on the practice loops on this page against only seven sets of traffic signals, and not one conventional roundabout anywhere on the set, so the same decision comes round again and again with nothing to make it for you. Nearly two thirds of the loop length is 30 mph and more than a quarter is 40. The wait is the longest thing about this centre, running at around six months.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
Three mini-roundabouts and no conventional roundabout at all: that is the shape of the road network around this centre. What joins the roads instead is give-way lines, and they are where the marks go at Arbroath. Nothing tells you when to move; you read the gap yourself, and the examiner watches you do it over and over.
The rest is dense town driving. The practice loops on this page cover 45.4 km and carry 59 give-way junctions, seven sets of traffic signals, seven signalled crossings and eight zebra crossings. The zebras matter, because nothing tells you when to stop at one, and with only five traffic calming features on the same loops there is little to slow you into them.
Speeds are ordinary. Nearly two thirds of the loop length is 30 mph, a little over a quarter is 40, and a small share is 20 or slower, the slowest being the retail park itself. The A933 and the B roads carry the 40 mph stretches, and that is where undue hesitation starts to be marked.
The loops run between 7.2 km and 10.3 km. Three of the five take in Westway, the road out of the retail park, so most candidates drive it twice on the day, once at the start and once at the end. Arbirlot Road West, Viewfield Road and Gallowden Road are the other names that come up. Two level crossings sit on the loops, and six schools sit in the surrounding area, which is worth knowing if your slot falls in the middle of the afternoon.

Test day at Arbroath
The centre shares a site with the Asda supermarket on Westway Retail Park, on Dundee Road at the western edge of Arbroath. Retail park units are easy to drive past, so look for the unit rather than the shop sign. DVSA publishes that you can access this centre if you use a wheelchair, and car tests are the only tests run here.
Parking is not a worry: a supermarket car park surrounds you. Nothing is published about where candidates should leave a car, though, and the bays nearest the door fill up, so arrive with time to walk. Arbroath station is a little under two kilometres away.
The wait is the real problem. A test taken in July had been booked about twenty-six weeks earlier, and the first week with slots genuinely free was around 24 weeks out. Dundee is half an hour away with a much shorter wait and a lower pass rate. Montrose and Forfar are closer but not much quicker.
One warning about the monthly figures quoted for Arbroath. A single month here can rest on 45 tests, and 45 tests will produce a rate over 90 per cent or under 60 without anything about the centre having changed. Judge it on the year. Booking, moving and cancelling is only through GOV.UK.
