Key facts

  • Chester's pass rate was 47.3% in 2025/26 from 9,212 tests, 2.7 points below the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 21 of 31 centres in North West (North West average 49.0%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 1.7 points below it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 4.1 points, from 43.2% to 47.3%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 14.4 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 20.8 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 10.4 weeks, so waits have grown by about 4 weeks.
  • 25.4% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

The Chester test centre is not in Chester. It sits on the Dunkirk Trading Estate at Chester Gates, out towards Capenhurst and the Wirral, and the driving reflects that. Only thirteen sets of traffic lights and two mini-roundabouts lie within a couple of miles, so the city-centre skills most people practise for are barely tested. Roundabouts do the work instead. Every one of the five practice loops on this page carries at least four of them and one has seven, with Backford Cross, Dunkirk Roundabout and Strawberry Roundabout among the named junctions. Sixteen per cent of the mapped roads nearby are 50 mph while sixty-one per cent are 20, which is an odd split and a demanding one. The loops run between about seven and nine miles each.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

This is a rural test dressed up as a city one. Sixty-one per cent of the mapped roads within a couple of miles are 20 mph, which sounds like estate driving, but sixteen per cent are 50 and the loops are long, between about seven and nine miles. What that combination produces is a drive that keeps changing character: village streets, then a lane, then a fast open road, then another village.

Roundabouts link them. Every loop carries at least four and the busiest has seven, and because the ones at Backford Cross and Dunkirk Roundabout carry through traffic rather than local traffic, the gaps are decided by drivers who are not slowing down for anyone. Parkgate Road, Liverpool Road and Chester Road feed into them.

Worth practising specifically before a Chester test:

  • Country lanes with no centre line, where meeting an oncoming car means finding a passing place rather than squeezing past.
  • The 50 mph sections, driven at a speed that suits the road rather than a cautious 40, and slowed properly for the bends.
  • Roundabout approaches from a fast road, where the speed has to come off well before the give-way line.
  • Junctions emerging onto a 50, where the gap you need is longer than instinct suggests.

There are no level crossings anywhere in the area, so that is one hazard you can leave off the list. Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the quieter roads around Demage Lane, Grove Road and Dunkirk Lane, where the kerbs are straight and there is little passing traffic. Longer loops reach out along Capenhurst Lane and St Asaph Road.

Test day at Chester

The centre is Unit 16, Telford Court, on the Dunkirk Trading Estate at Chester Gates. It is an industrial unit among other industrial units, so the number on the door is what you want rather than a sign from the road. Allow a couple of minutes to find it.

GOV.UK publishes no access line for Chester, so if you use a wheelchair or need anything arranged, ring the centre before the day rather than assuming either way. It runs car tests, motorcycle module 2 on the road, and ADI part 2 and part 3.

Candidate parking is not published. Trading estate units of this kind usually have some space nearby, though the bays are as often behind the block as in front of it and other businesses use them too, so treat a space as typical rather than reserved. Capenhurst station is about a mile and a half away, which is walkable but not quick, and most candidates come with an instructor.

The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and asks you to sign the insurance declaration, and the eyesight check is done outside on the estate. Booking, moving and cancelling all happen through GOV.UK. Waits here have grown by about three and a half weeks over the past year.
