Key facts

  • Swindon's pass rate was 51.1% in 2025/26 from 12,857 tests, in line with the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 12 of 21 centres in South West (South West average 51.7%), a mid-table pass rates in the region.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 4.5 points, from 46.6% to 51.1%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 11.7 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 22 weeks ahead.
  • 31.5% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Count the roundabouts before you book. The five practice loops on this page run to between ten and twelve kilometres each, and they contain 22, 20, 20, 14 and 22 roundabouts respectively. That is a roundabout every few hundred metres for the whole of the test. The mapping within 2.5 km of Fenn Close backs it up: 21 mini-roundabouts and eight named ones, including Mannington, Fiveways, Windmill and Tewkesbury Cross. Almost three quarters of the roads in that radius are 30 limits, so the speeds are moderate and it is the approaches that decide the test. The pass rate sits close to the national average and has risen since 2021. The wait is around eleven weeks.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

West Swindon is built as a set of estates hung off distributor roads, and the joins are almost all roundabouts. Mead Way, Tewkesbury Way, Roughmoor Way, Peatmoor Way and Whitehill Way carry most of the driving on the loops, and each of them meets the next at a roundabout rather than a junction. On the busiest of the practice loops on this page that adds up to 22 roundabout entries in a little over ten kilometres.

Worth practising specifically before a Swindon test:

  • Reading the lane markings and the sign on the approach, then choosing the lane early enough that the choice is not being made in the last car length.
  • Holding the correct line all the way round a multi-lane roundabout and signalling off at the right moment.
  • Roundabouts in series, where the exit of one is the approach to the next and there is no time to reset between them.
  • Mini-roundabouts, of which 21 are mapped within 2.5 km. Give way to the right, signal the exit, and drive round the painted circle rather than over it.
  • Keeping moving. Where roundabouts come this thickly, undue hesitation is marked as often as anything else.

Away from the distributor roads the driving is ordinary. Purton Road, Rivermead Drive and the residential streets off Middleleaze Drive and Tamworth Drive are 30 and 20 limits with parked cars, side turnings and 21 schools scattered across the area. Two level crossings are mapped nearby. Manoeuvres are usually asked for on those quieter estate roads, where the kerbs run straight and the parking sits on one side.

Test day at Swindon

The centre is at 1 Fenn Close in Peatmoor, on the western side of Swindon rather than anywhere near the town centre. The nearest station recorded near the centre is a small halt about two kilometres away, so this is not a place people reach by train. Nearly everyone arrives by car with an instructor.

The tests taken here are car, motorcycle module 1 off road, motorcycle module 2 on the road, and ADI part 3. Nothing is published about step-free access, toilets or the waiting room, so if any of that matters to you, ring the centre and ask before the day rather than finding out at the door. Parking is not published either, and the usual arrangement at a centre in a residential setting like this is a drop at the door with a space found on a nearby road, which is typical rather than confirmed.

Arrive about ten minutes before your slot. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and takes the signed declaration that the car is insured for the test. The eyesight check is done outside before you get in, and the drive begins on the estate roads, so the first roundabout comes early. Booking, moving and cancelling all go through GOV.UK.
