Key facts
- Burgess Hill's pass rate was 45.5% in 2025/26 from 11,237 tests, 4.5 points below the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 27 of 30 centres in South East (South East average 52.9%), one of the lower pass rates in the region, 7.4 points below it.
- The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 43.2% (2024/25) and 47.1% (2021/22).
- Male candidates passed at 44% and female candidates at 47.3%, a gap of 3.3 points.
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 14.9 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 24 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 11.6 weeks, so waits have grown by about 3.3 weeks.
Burgess Hill is a 40 mph test as much as a 30 one. Of the roads tagged within two and a half kilometres of the centre, 44 per cent are 40 mph and 45 per cent are 30, an almost even split you will not find at most town centres. Jane Murray Way, the wide modern road on the edge of the town, carries much of that faster driving and appears on three of the five practice loops on this page. The centre itself is off Charles Avenue on the Victoria Industrial Estate. The pass rate has been steady for years at a few points below the national average, and the wait is one of the longer ones in the South East.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
The 40 mph roads are what to prepare for. Nearly as many roads tagged around the centre are 40 as are 30, and Jane Murray Way and the A273 carry limits and sightlines that make 40 feel slower than it is. Undue hesitation is marked as readily as speeding, and a candidate who sits well under the limit on a clear 40 mph road will collect faults for it. There is dual carriageway in the area as well, so joining and leaving at speed is a live part of the test rather than a theoretical one.
Roundabouts come next. Twelve mini-roundabouts sit within a couple of miles of the centre, and the named ones include the London Road roundabout, Hoadley's Corner, Royal George Road and the pair at Fairplace Hill. The mix is what matters. A mini-roundabout and a full-size one inside the same mile want different approaches, and the fault that turns up is treating the small one as a formality because the road looks empty.
By contrast there are only ten signalled junctions in the whole area, so traffic lights barely feature. Twelve schools sit inside the same radius, which is few, and the 20 mph share is small, around one road in twenty. This is not a test made of calmed residential streets, and preparing for it as though it were is the usual mistake.
Manoeuvres are set away from the through routes, on quieter roads of the kind the loops use around William Way and Chanctonbury Road, where the kerbs are straight and parking is heavy enough on one side to make a pull-up on the right worth doing properly.

Test day at Burgess Hill
The centre is off Charles Avenue on the Victoria Industrial Estate. Industrial estate addresses are easy to get wrong at the last minute, so go in on the postcode and find the unit rather than the street name.
DVSA runs car tests, motorcycle module 1 off-road, module 2 on-road and ADI part 3 here, and the centre is accessible if you use a wheelchair. Because module 1 is done off the road, part of a site like this has to be given over to motorcycle work, which is worth knowing when you look for somewhere to leave the car. Parking for candidates is not published, so plan for it being limited and shared, as it usually is on this kind of site.
Burgess Hill station is under two kilometres away, which makes this one of the easier centres in the area to reach without a car if your instructor is meeting you there.
Tests are booked, moved and cancelled only through GOV.UK, and the wait here is worth planning around. The median for a July test was close to fifteen weeks, up by about three weeks on the year before and longer than at Crawley down the road. Book well ahead and use cancellations rather than waiting them out.
