  • That puts it 7 of 21 centres in South West (South West average 51.7%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 3.5 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has risen by 4.9 points, from 50.3% to 55.2%.

Trowbridge is a mini-roundabout town, and the numbers are startling. There are thirty mini-roundabouts within two and a half kilometres of the test centre, plus eight conventional roundabouts and twenty-six sets of traffic signals. Almost every practice loop on this page crosses five to nine roundabouts of one sort or the other. If you are weak on give way to the right, exit signals and lane choice on approach, this is the centre that will find it out. Add twenty schools inside the same radius and a road network where a quarter of the streets are 20 mph, and a Trowbridge drive is a steady sequence of small decisions rather than one big test of nerve.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

The roundabouts define this centre. Thirty mini-roundabouts and eight conventional ones sit within two and a half kilometres, and the practice loops on this page cross between five and nine of them each. The named ones you are most likely to meet are:

  • West Ashton Road and Hilperton Road, on the eastern side near the centre
  • Bythesea Road and County Way, on the ring around the town centre
  • Devizes Road, Garth Road and Cusance Way, out towards the northern edge

Mini-roundabouts produce most of the marks. The faults are always the same three: no exit signal, arriving too fast to give way properly to the right, and driving over the painted circle instead of round it. Two mini-roundabouts in quick succession is common here, and the second one is where signals get forgotten.

The rest of the profile is ordinary in a way that helps. Just over half the tagged roads nearby are 30 mph and a little under a third are 20, with about one in eight at 40. There are no level crossings. County Way, Bradley Road, Frome Road and Stallard Street carry the through traffic and the signals, and twenty-six sets of lights in the area means stop-line discipline and lane selection get tested repeatedly.

Manoeuvres are usually asked for on the quieter residential roads, and the loops here run through Broadcloth Lane, Sheepcote Barton, Haden Road and Leap Gate. Twenty schools sit inside the same radius, so an afternoon test can put you into a school run on streets that are already narrow with parked cars.

Test day at Trowbridge

The centre is at Longfield Community Centre on Weavers Drive, a community building rather than a dedicated DVSA office, on the eastern side of town. Trowbridge station is about a kilometre away. Parking is not published for candidates here, and a shared community building usually means shared parking, so the honest advice is to arrive with time in hand and expect the car park to have other users in it.

DVSA publishes that this centre provides car tests. Nothing is published about wheelchair access or about arrangements for candidates with a disability, so if you need either you should ring DVSA before booking rather than raise it on the morning. No published line is not a refusal, but it does mean you have to ask the question yourself.

After the licence check and the insurance declaration, the eyesight check is done outside on a parked plate. The drive begins on Weavers Drive in a residential area and reaches a roundabout quickly, which is representative of the whole test. Waits here are shorter than the national median, so if your date is not convenient it is usually worth looking again on GOV.UK rather than accepting the first slot offered.
