Key facts
- Taunton's pass rate was 59.5% in 2025/26 from 8,259 tests, 9.5 points above the national average of 50.0%.
- That puts it 4 of 21 centres in South West (South West average 51.7%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 7.8 points above it.
- The rate has been stable since 2021/22, moving between 55.5% (2023/24) and 59.6% (2021/22).
- On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 11.9 weeks since booking; the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 16.4 weeks ahead.
- A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 8.7 weeks, so waits have grown by about 3.2 weeks.
- 28.1% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.
Taunton is one of the easier centres in the South West on the numbers, fourth of 21 in the region and 46th of 302 nationally, and it has held that position for years rather than having a good run. Part of the reason is how even the driving is. Some 85 per cent of the roads mapped within 2.5 km of Venture Way are 30 limits, with very little at 20 and not much above 40, so you are rarely changing speed and mostly reading junctions. There are plenty of those: eight named roundabouts, fifteen mini-roundabouts and 39 signalled junctions in that radius. The wait has grown by about three and a half weeks over the past year, though slots are still coming free.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.
The routes leave the business park onto Venture Way and Priorswood Road and reach a roundabout almost at once. How many follow depends on which way you are sent. One of the practice loops on this page holds fourteen roundabouts in 11.6 kilometres, another eleven, and a third only four across a similar distance. The named ones nearby include Hankridge, Nerrols Farm, Blackbrook North and The Parade, with fifteen mini-roundabouts alongside them.
Toneway and Obridge Viaduct are the fast part. These carry the traffic between the town and the main roads east, they are wider than anything else on the routes, and they feed roundabouts that are approached at speed. Choosing the lane early and holding it round is the skill they test.
Priorswood Road, Bridgwater Road and Heron Gate are the everyday driving: 30 limits with side turnings, parked cars, bus stops and shops. With 85 per cent of the local roads at 30, the discipline is holding an accurate 30 for long stretches without letting it creep, which sounds easy and is the single most common source of speed faults at centres like this.
Two level crossings are mapped within 2.5 km, and 27 schools sit in the same radius, so an afternoon slot is likely to run into a school run somewhere on the route.
Manoeuvres are usually set on the quieter residential roads north of the centre, off Nerrols Drive and Kinglake Drive, where the kerbs are straight and there is enough parking on one side to make a pull-up on the right worth asking for.

Test day at Taunton
The centre is Unit L2 on Acres Hill Business Park, off Venture Way on the northern edge of Taunton. Taunton station is about 1.6 kilometres away, which is a walk of twenty minutes or so, though most candidates arrive with an instructor.
One thing to know if you booked a while ago: the building was closed for refurbishment from late February until early May 2026, with testing run from portacabins in the car park and space on site limited. Testing moved back into the building in May, so the arrangements you may have read about no longer apply.
The tests taken here are car, motorcycle module 1 off road, motorcycle module 2 on the road, and ADI parts 2 and 3, which is a wide range for a centre of this size. Nothing is published about step-free access, so ring and ask if you need to know before the day. Parking is not published either, and bays on the estate rather than at the door are typical of a business park unit.
Arrive about ten minutes before your slot. The examiner calls you by name, checks your licence and takes the signed insurance declaration. The eyesight check is done outside on the business park. Booking, moving and cancelling all go through GOV.UK.

- On the day
- Due to refurbishment works, from Thursday 26th February until Tuesday 5th May 2026, the building at Taunton Test Centre will be fully closed. The test centre will be operating from portacabins in the car park which will include a waiting room and toilet facilities. During this time, there will be limited space available in the car park. Customers should ensure they are only on site if they have a driving test booked and should arrive no more than 10 minutes before the start of the test time. This will help ensure all tests are run smoothly from start to finish. Testing at the building will resume from Tuesday 5th May 2026.
Other tests at Taunton
This centre is not car only. DVSA publishes results for these categories separately, and they are taken by different candidates on different vehicles, so the rates are not comparable with the car figure above.

What examiners mark most often
DVSA does not publish faults by centre, but it does publish them nationally. These collected the most marks across every car test in Great Britain in 2025/26, and they are the same ones you will be marked on at Taunton.
