Key facts

  • Skegness's pass rate was 55.9% in 2025/26 from 2,078 tests, 5.9 points above the national average of 50.0%.
  • That puts it 7 of 20 centres in East Midlands (East Midlands average 50.8%), one of the higher pass rates in the region, 5.1 points above it.
  • Since 2021/22 the pass rate has fallen by 6.2 points, from 62.1% to 55.9%.
  • On waiting times, learners who took a test in August 2026 had waited a median of 17.9 weeks since booking (longer than the national median of 11.9 weeks); the first week with 10% or more of slots still free was 11 weeks ahead.
  • A year earlier (August 2025) the median wait was 8.9 weeks, so waits have grown by about 9 weeks.
  • 21.7% of the standard slots in the booking window were still unbooked in August 2026, which usually means a cancellation or new date is realistic here.

Skegness runs its tests from the football ground on Wainfleet Road, at the southern end of town. It is a seaside centre and it drives like one: nearly every road in the area is a 30 mph limit, the streets behind the front are laid out in long avenues full of parked cars and pedestrians, and traffic volumes swing hard with the season. There are twenty-three sets of traffic signals within two and a half kilometres, which is a lot for a town this size, and three level crossings on the railway that runs in from Wainfleet. Just over two thousand car tests are taken here each year, and the wait has stretched by about seven weeks in the past twelve months.

The same access also opens the four test manoeuvres and eight roundabout scenarios: the two things a route drive cannot teach you.

Ninety-five per cent of the tagged roads around this centre are 30 mph. There is almost no variation to manage, which sounds easy and is not: a limit that never changes means the examiner is looking at everything else, and in Skegness that means observation, positioning and hazard awareness in streets full of parked cars.

The signals are the first thing to prepare for. Twenty-three sets of lights sit within two and a half kilometres, a density you would expect in a small city rather than a resort. Lumley Road and Scarbrough Avenue have the two conventional roundabouts, and there are five mini-roundabouts scattered across the town on top of that. The combination of closely spaced lights and mini-roundabouts is what produces the classic faults here: creeping over a stop line, and treating a mini-roundabout as a give way you can roll straight through.

The residential half of the drive runs through Queens Road, Holly Road, Lyndhurst Avenue, Alma Avenue, Lumley Avenue, Grosvenor Road and Sea View Road. These are wide enough to look forgiving and are usually parked on both sides, with pedestrians stepping out between cars, particularly in summer. Meeting traffic and deciding who gives way is a constant.

Three level crossings sit in the area, on the line running out towards Wainfleet, so a stop at a barrier is a realistic part of a Skegness test. Longer practice loops on this page head inland on Lincoln Road, Heath Road, Warth Lane and Cowbank Lane, where the town gives way to flat fen roads, the limit rises and the bends arrive without much warning.

Test day at Skegness

The centre is at the MKM Stadium on Wainfleet Road, the home of Skegness Town Football Club, so you are looking for a football ground rather than an office. Skegness station is about a ten-minute walk away, which makes arriving by train straightforward if your instructor is meeting you there. Parking arrangements for candidates are not published; a ground of this kind normally has space off the road, but do not count on a particular bay, and leave enough time to sort it out calmly.

DVSA publishes only that this centre provides car tests. Nothing is published about wheelchair access or arrangements for candidates with a disability, so if you need either, ring DVSA before the date rather than assuming. That silence is not the same as a no, but it does mean you have to ask.

The routine on the morning is the usual one. The examiner checks your licence and has you sign the insurance declaration, then the eyesight check is done outside on a parked plate. From the stadium you turn out onto Wainfleet Road, which carries the through traffic into town, so the first thing you do under test is judge a gap and get up to 30 without dawdling in the mouth of the junction.
